Dear all, I landed in Canada for the first time with my COPR in July 2020. I stayed for 20 days and then came back to my home country. Now I am going back to Canada in August end to settle there for good. In the past one year, my wife has acquired some jewellery which we had not declared at the time of landing (since we didn't have it at the time of first landing). It will be very helpful if you can please let me know your response to the questions below.

1) can we take this jewellery with us?
2) can it be exempt from import duty/ tax?
3) what documents should we carry for this new jewellery?
4) if it is not exempt from duty/tax what is the amount we should expect to pay CBSA?
5) if this jewellery is not exempt and we have thre ememebrs of the family (me, my wife and my 2 year son) - can we together claim an exemption of CAD 2400 on this jewelley, given that each of us has CAD 800 exemption

Please let me know.
Thank you

1) Yes,
2) You need to read the exemption first from the cbsa website
3) Pictures and valuation report
4) The above website has all the details
5) This will be decided by the custom officer you encountered. The child doesn't count.

Dear @canuck78; @scylla; @Islander216 - I landed in Canada for the first time with my COPR in July 2020. I stayed for 20 days and then came back to my home country. In the past one year, my wife has acquired some jewellery which we had not declared at the time of landing (since we didn't have it at the time of first landing). It will be very helpful if you can please let me know your response to the questions below.

1) can we take this jewelry with us?
2) can it be exempt from import duty/ tax? If yes, what documents are required
3) if it is not exempt from duty/tax what is the amount we should expect to pay CBSA? What documents should we carry in this case
4) if this jewelry is not exempt and we have three members of the family (me, my wife and my 2 year son) - can we together claim an exemption of CAD 2400 on this jewelry, given that each of us has CAD 800 exemption. If my son doesn't count can we as a couple get an exemption of CAD 1600?

Please let me know.
Thank you
