Hello,

My wife will be arriving to Canada soon. I wanted some advice on how to declare cash and other valuable items. She will be bringing a little over $10k CAD in cash and some gold she received during our wedding. What is the process to declare these items to ensure it can come through?

Thanks

Easy one!

If she is coming to visit:
When the CBSA officer asks her if she is carrying more than 10k in currency, she will answer truthfully. She can bring as much as she wants, as long as she declares it.

If she is coming to stay while awaiting PR:
Start with the same and follow whatever the officer says. When a person becomes a PR they have to declare the goods that they are bring into Canada, as well as indicating `Goods to Follow'.

Regarding the gold...same process.

Now, what do you mean by saying "...and other valuable items"?

Apologies, I was referring to gold when I said valuable items. She'll be arriving on PR. When we say declare, does she have to fill out any paperwork in advance or at the border? Or does she only have to let the CBSA officer know that she has X amount in cash and gold total? Also, what do you mean by "Goods to follow"?

Also, would you know what documents the officer may ask her regarding the cash and gold? I want to ensure that she is prepared.

Goods to follow are things you bring at a later time than the date stamped on your original BSF paperwork.

Since you will be downloading the relevant form anyways, check the CBSA website for details.

I am in the process of be sponsored (inland). My spouse, paid for the sponsorhip fee and open work permit before i submitted my application. I have received AOR. I want to apply for open work permit and they requested for open work permit fee before application will be submitted. Please how will i submit the receipt of the open work permit previously paid or should i pay for another fee?

Thanks, I took a quick look at the website. She'll need to fill out the individual declaration form for currency. However, I don't see anything specific to gold. She has a bit of gold that she was gifted recently and some that she's had for quite some time. She may not have the receipts for everything.

1. Would she have to pay any duties or taxes on the gold?
2. Does she need receipts for everything?
3. For the currency, I'm assuming she would need some proof such as conversion fee receipt, right? Is the money taxed?

1. If she is landing as new PR, goods that belongs to her before she migrate will not be taxed (or charged for duty)
2. She will need receipts or appraisals (for valuable jewelries). For casual personal items, clothing...etc., it's fine if she just put an estimate value.
3. I think she may be asked the source of the cash she is bringing over. Money is never taxed.
