Brief stay after landing

Is there a forum here about staying in Canada for a short time pre-planned after Landing for the first time?

Need to be there before February to beat the deadline in my visa, but I don't want to stay there for the terrible winter. Thus looking forward to going back on Summer...

The winter here in Vancouver is not terrible. As of now, there is no snow (although in the mountains) but sunny. Pretty nice weather.

Hi Steaky,

My Landing will be in Vancouver but I was nominated by Saskatchewan PNP. I will be going there after New Year... :)

Short stay following landing and then returning later to settle in Canada is a fairly common approach, and thus often comes up. Not sure if there is a particular topic where it has been discussed at length.

There should be no problem, particularly if you do in fact return to settle in Canada within the year (technically a new PR has up to three years to get to Canada and settle, but that is cutting it close and does not leave the new PR with any time left to go abroad in the next two years, such as for family emergencies or business purposes).

If you do not have an address in Canada at the time of landing, you will probably have to obtain a PR Travel Document to return to Canada later and once you have returned to stay in Canada then apply for a PR card.

Thanks dpenabill and COPR,

- @ interview upon landing, is it ok to be open to a planned return to my country before getting my PR card? (i.e. I am landing there to say... "I'm just going to stay there for a while for now")
- How do I declare the stuff I will bring if the stuff I will bring are good for short travel only?
- Will it complicate if I stay in Vancouver for several days before going to SK? I don't mind showing a 4-6 day booking at SK after staying in Vancouver + plane ticket. Want to have my NYE with my relatives in Vancouver (which I did declare openly in my application).

No worries, i can answer question one and two, the third one I'm not confident in answering as it's different to my experience.

1. the 'interview' is basically just to go through your documents, no trick questions so don't worry. they will ask if you have an address to send your PR card to, you can either say yes or no. I was planning to have the PR card sent to a friend but then they asked if i was staying there for a long period to which i had to say no. they then gave me a form to send in once i'm on my way to apply for my pr card.

2. this also depends, you can complete form BSF186 - one for goods you have with you and one for goods to follow (if you know what you're taking at a later date) I did it a different way but still don't know if that will work so won't suggest doing it. once i land in february i can share my experience

good luck

Thanks a lot COPR. How long did you stay in Canada in the brief period? Did the Officer bother about staying briefly?

I was only there for 2 weeks, I actually 'landed' to activate my Pr but actually entered as a visitor, this allowed me to do my entry from a customs point of view when i go back in february

Hi COPR,

For the first/short stay, do I have to bring all the money I mentioned I will bring in my application (i.e. 'Proof of Funds)? I do still have that much money at home but I don't want to bring all of them (in addition, I just realized my bank can't issue a traveller check of my local currency).

Hi there, I'm afraid this is hard for me to answer, I had my PR approved under family sponsorship so didn't have to show any proof of funds.

I guess though that the point is in the 'proof' you don't have to show it physically (someone may correct me) just show you have it. Can you not do an FX conversion where you are from and then have a travelers cheque made out in Canadian Dollars?
