Hello,
I have a closed work permit until december 2014 and I have just sent the application for PR under Canadian Experience Class.
My company is about to close, I know I can stay in Canada until my WP expires but I can't work if my company closes.
I also know the the bridging open work permit is just for who has a WP that is due to expire within 4 months.

What can I do?

Unfortunately you don't qualify for a BOWP. I believe your only option is to look for a new employer who can obtain an approved LMO and then apply for a new closed work permit.

Any other options?

I suppose another option would be to return to your home country and work there while the CEC application is being processed. You don't have to be in Canada while your application is being processed.

that would be a problem...thank you

Apply for a visitors visa for the time being?

I can stay in Canada until december 2014 the problem is I can't work until my PR is done.

Could I reduce the validity of my closed work permit? If my company closes I do not have anything to lose.

Hi Toronto1360,

someone who is in same situation as you just recently got BOWP attaching an explanation letter.
I may recall wrong. but look at this topic posted:

One of our friends was in a similar situation and he submitted an app for BOWP even if his closed WP was expiring in 2014. He attached an explanation letter that his employer is ending his contract in June 2013 and hence he is applying for a BOWP. Fortunately enough, his BOWP has been approved.

There is no harm in you trying this as well. Worst case, your BOWP will be rejected but you can still stay in Canada since your Closed WP would still be valid. But remember, if your BOWP is issued, then the validity of BOWP wil supercede the validity of ur closed WP.

That is a great news!
WHat about if my company fails or if I am in lay off?
It's kind of the same, right?
Did he attach a letter from his employer?

As people have stated above, you should apply for BOWP with an explanation letter stating your situation.

You are not doing anything wrong, I think you will receive BOWP with your situation.

CIC intent with BOWP is to provide legal status to positive decision PR applicants. if your company is closing in few months, it is implied that applicant would like to apply for another WP to stay legally. Nothing wrong. Apply for it and Good Luck.

As far as I know the applicant just wrote an explanation letter and submitted along with his application. He did not provide any employer letters. Go ahead.

If your company can provide a letter detailing that they are about to close off, I guess that will only help your case more. As the other members have already mentioned above, there is no reason you should not apply. Specially, since one of the members here got the BOWP on a closed WP which had 12 months to expire. Your case sounds similar and actually, because of your company being closed down soon, you seem more entitled to get a BOWP (just my opinion formed on the basis of others' experiences).

(link to the other case:http://www.canadavisa.com/canada-immigration-discussion-board/bowp-how-many-of-you-have-applied-and-received-it-successfully-t139027.0.html;msg2254566#msg2254566)

Explain the situation in a cover letter, if you can add a letter from your company to strengthen your case that will be awesome. In either case you should apply. Worst thing that can happen is you will lose your $150.

All the best.

Hi guys,

Did anyone apply for a "couple" BOWP? I'm on closed WP till Oct 2013 and my wife on open WP. Our PR application is in process (me: principal applicant) and was wondering if we both can apply for BOWP in June 2013?

Thanks!
