Bridging Open Work Permit after work permit expires - possible or not?

Hello all,

I am applying under CEC in a few weeks (couldn't do it earlier - needed 1 year work experience) and my PGWP will expire a month after I apply. Judging by the processing times I see in this forum's posts, I will not receive my AOR in time to apply for BOWP. Is there any way they would accept my application for BOWP if I submit it a week or so after my work permit expires? Should I apply before it expires although I don't have my AOR? What are your thoughts?

After expiry no.

Some here have tried submitting a paper application right before WP expires. That way give the processing time it's likely that by the time CIC starts processing you've already received your AOR.

Of course this is not guaranteed to work.

Thanks guys! All this information is extremely helpful. My PGWP expires Sept 1 & I will apply under CEC last week of July. If I don't get AOR by August 25th, I am sending an application for BOWP. Just have to figure out if I should do it online or by regular mail.

Regular mail. You want them to process it more slowly to buy you time.

Be aware that this drags out your implied status, which has its own problems (like not being able to leave the country or qualify for provincial health coverage - so don't get sick).

If your AOR is due only a few days after your permit expires, you might think about (a) submitting online instead, or (b) submitting by post, but earlier. AORs for the May 2014 cohort are taking about 40 days. Of course these trends can change and often do.

My Closed Work Permit expires sometime in Feb 2015 and my spouse Open Work Permit expires in Nov 2014. I really want to convert my Closed work permit to Open work permit based on the AOR and I know my spouse is eligible to apply to extend work permit.

Can someone suggest if CIC would accept the application and process even if the Work Permit is valid for more than 4 months.

Got my AOR during the end of May 2014 and hope to get medical sometime in November.

BOWP is not a realistic option yet: you seem to meet all the conditions except the four-month one - and that's not flexible.

If your spouse is in a skilled occupation (NOC 0, A, B) you may qualify for an open permit that way.

worked for me as well, but i applied using paper mail to buy
myself some time, because my work permit expires 2 weeks immediately after my PR application received.

Even I have a similar case. I applied for an open work permit two weeks ago based on my Nomination certificate and letter that i got from PNP. That letter is the initial letter that i got when PNP was issued to me, and they didnt issue any other letter as a supporting document and said that i can apply for Open work permit based on that. I filed a paper based application because I dont have AOR. Did i do the right thing?. What if my PNP certificate expires before they start processing my application for open work permit, i dont even have AOR yet?. How long would it take to get the work permit roughly?. Please reply asap.

It takes around 90 days when you submit paper application!
