OTTAWA — Budget cuts at Citizenship and Immigration are resulting in the closure or consolidation of 19 offices across Canada, Postmedia News has learned.
Officials say the services provided by these offices will be relocated or moved online as the department moves towards the “electronic application, payment and processing of files.
This modernized paperless system allows work to be done anywhere and means that less physical space is required,” CIC spokesman Jack Branswell said in an email.
“As a result, CIC is restructuring, and will streamline by reducing the number of small regional offices across the country.”
The cuts are expected to impact CIC staff involved in finance and the IT help desk most of all.
Here’s a list of the offices being closed and the number of staff that will be affected:
• Nanaimo, B.C. = 2
• Prince George, B.C. = 1
• Kelowna, B.C. =7
• Victoria, B.C. = 9
• Lethbridge, AB = 4
• Regina, SK = 7
• Thunder Bay, ON = 2
• Barrie, ON = 5
• Oshawa, ON = 6
• Sudbury, ON = 4
• Sault St. Marie, ON = 2
• Kingston, ON = 2
• Gatineau, QC = 3
• Sherbrooke, QC = 7
• Trois Rivieres, QC = vacant
• Quebec, QC = 4
• Saint John, NB = 2
• Moncton, NB = staff to be relocated
• Charlottetown, PEI = 0
Last week Postmedia News reported that 516 notices were sent out to CIC employees notifying them of looming job cuts.
Of them 283 would be laid off — 200 immediately and 83 more following a job competition.
