Hi there,

I'm here on behalf of my boyfriend, he's an American citizen and lives in Dayton, Ohio, USA. I'm a legal Canadian citizen living in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. We've been together a little over a year. We've visited back and forth and are looking to have him move to Toronto in November. I'm trying to get a lay out of all the information we need to be able to have him find a job, move and apply for permanent residency. If anyone can help us out that would be wonderful. Or if you know of some links to contacts that could help please post them.

I was born in Dayton ;) <~~~ See Ohio State Flag!

His best bet to find a job is through NAFTA. If he has a bachelor's degree or better, can he look at the NAFTA jobs and see what he matches to the best.

He will probably need to already be in Canada to get a job - not required, but easier. He can visit Canada and look for a job as a visitor. He just can't work until he gets the proper work permit.

If he doesn't qualify for NAFTA, is he part of a semi-skilled profession, such as a trade like plumber, welder, etc.

Take a look at that and let me know. I have endless advice on the American "moving" to Canada bit :D

He has college & university degree's but they are mostly in film and he's been working at Krogers for 15 years. He spoke to the consulate about getting information as to what to do to move here and their advice was to bring resumes up when he visits. He'll be up next Friday staying with me and my mother till the 22nd. Glad to know your from Ohio. It would mean a lot if you can help us out :-). He's looking to find jobs in retail particularly in liquor because at his job currently, he's been given a lot of hours working there and enjoys it. Oh and if I am correct he has Bachelor degree too !.

He's going to have trouble getting a job in retail if it doesn't require a degree. He could try for "management consultant" as his experience could match, although I'm not sure about the degree part. Sometimes the IO is strict and sometimes they are totally laid back and nice. ::)

I can't get jobs in retail, even ones I'm vastly overqualified for. Employers can't get LMOs for most retail positions because there are ample Canadians available for the jobs. It won't be anything about him - just how the system works.

He should definitely look for jobs that require a bachelor's degree.

My dad is the nemesis of his local Kroger management staff......... :D He goes there almost every day and bothers them.

I kinda figured that he would have issues trying to get into a retail type of job. He may just have to use what education he has to see what he can get instead. I can understand how difficult it is to try to impress these people for sure. I will actually get him to join up on here or use this account with me and he can talk to you as well to get more advice. Hahaha !

Hey, I just talked with him on the phone, he says he has a bachelors degree in arts.

Did he look at the NAFTA list? I'm not the best expert on it, but he should read it over. I've seen the advice here from other Americans that NAFTA can be used as a sort of blank slate - used in many applications for almost anything. As long as he has the bachelor's, he should be able to use it.

Well, the good news is NAFTA will make life easier (hopefully). Does he have management experience? A lot of retail management requires college or university education, so that could be an option.

He's at work right now. But I will get him to look over a lot of this information. As he told me the only bachelors degree he has is in arts and his experience is strickly as a cashier. He's never been in management at all.

He may have trouble convincing the IO he has sufficient experience to qualify for NAFTA then. He may want to go on to Kijiji and search for "LMO" and "TFW" and see what is availabe for LMO work permits. To get a cashier type job, he would need a LMO.

A LMO is authorization from HRSDC to hire a foreign worker. I've had 0 luck in my search (and I had management experience but no degree). If his job isn't covered by NAFTA, he would need a LMO to get a work permit. That would get a closed work permit, meaning it's valid only for that employer.

BTW - Thank you so much for what you've shared with me thus far !. I hope to be able to keep in touch with you seeing you have a lot of great advice.

You're welcome. Once you get 10 posts, you can send PMs too, plus get an avatar and signature.

You and your boyfriend can also join the CPP-Ottawa thread and/or the US Outland Applicants thread. As you can imagine, there's a lot of Americans on both of those threads.

Thank you for all your advice. I'm looking out for jobs with emphasis in Bachelor of Arts degree requirements. And we're going to talk to Service Canada to find out more what we need to do and what steps to take when I come up next week.

It doesn't sound like you are in any of the NAFTA professions. It may also be difficult for you to get a LMO, because the company you're trying to work for will have to prove that they can't find a Canadian to do the job. Most of them aren't going to be willing to jump through those hoops for anything but highly specialized jobs.

And it doesn't appear that the LCBO is hiring any customer-service staff at the moment.
