Hi everyone !

My boyfriend and I met online over a year ago, he's from the US and I'm from Quebec. We're trying to get him to move here legally, but we have are not sure where and how we should start. I read somewhere that I could sponsor him, but even then I'm not sure it would be the right path to choose. He's currently at Walmart and could possibly get a transfer over here.
The only problem is that he isn't done with high school.
We just want to make sure we do everything right to avoid futur problems ;)

Thanks !

You can only sponsor him if you are either married or common law (common law means you have lived together for at least one full year). Unless he has a fairly senior management position at Walmart, it's very unlikely he will be able to get an Intra Company Transfer approved to allow him to transfer from his job in the US to a job in Canada. If he doesn't qualify for an Intra Company Transfer, he would have to find an employer who is willing to offer him a full time job in Canada and also obtain an approved LMIA. To obtain an approved LMIA, his employer will have to first advertise the job to prove no Canadian could be found for the role, then pay a $1000 fee - and then apply for the LMIA itself. If the LMIA is approved (not all are) - he can then apply for a work permit.

Thanks for your reply !

So our other option is for me to sustain him (that's not a problem) for 12 months since he can't work here ?

Yes - but keep in mind that he is only allowed to visit Canada - not live here. So when he arrives in Canada he needs to be careful that he doesn't look like someone who is coming to live in Canada. This means he should not pack like he's moving (he should pack like he's coming for a couple of weeks). He should also carry proof that shows he has ties to the US (ideally: proof of employment, proof of property ownership/rental, etc.).
