Hi All,
I am new to this so I am hoping I can get some help. My boyfriend came here to visit June 27, went back home to the U.S to work for a week August 11 and then when he re entered August 18th customs gave him an expiry date for September 30. Does anyone know why they would do that? We were also told that we could apply to extend his visa which we are doing over the next day or so. Does anyone have any tips? Our goal is to get it extended so he can look for a job then apply for a work visa, but also he is wanting to play on a semi pro basketball team which he has tryouts for this week,
Thanks so much!!

Maybe he told the border officers that he would be returning to US end of the month!

Immigration will typically give an American a shorter stay if they have been spending a lot of time in Canada (i.e. behaving more as a resident than a visitor) and/or they have been traveling in and out of Canada frequently and/or if they have concerns the American has plans to remain in Canada long term.

Your boyfriend will have to request an extension to his visit if he wants to stay past September 30th. I would not use the work visa and the basketball team as reasons for extending his visit. These reasons make it sound like he's looking to live in Canada rather than just extend his stay as a visitor.

They gave him a shorter stay because he's returning to US for only a week, and then trying to re-enter after a short period of time, which is almost like doing a visa run.

A genuine visitor is not supposed to live in Canada long term, and it seems like that's what he's trying to do by re-entering US for only a short time.
