Hi,

is it possible to apply for BOWP 6 months before expiry of current closed work permit. Current processing times for paper applications are 3 months so when officer process it it will be within required 4 months. Or should I be within 4 months until expiry when I send it. I was laid off and need new work permit as soon as possible.

I suggest you to apply online application after 2 or 3 weeks..
so that, it is to track online application rather than paper application.. as per current process timings it will 50 to 60 days.. so apply after 2 or 3 weeks, u l be fine..

The system doesn't let me to apply online if I don't put that I'm currently within 4 months. If I put, that would be lying. Do you maybe know still how to apply online regardless that?

U might be correct, then don't waste ur time, u can apply now immediately without second thought as it will take time.. good luck..

To be able to apply for BOWP you have to have a valid work permit expiring in less than 4 months, so no, as far as I know it's not possible to apply earlier.

That rule doesn't make much sense as processing times are few months. That would mean at least 4-5 months waiting!

I guess the rules were set when they had more sane processing times - I got mine last year in about 3 weeks.

Despite the 4 month rule, when one who has more than 4 months left, fills out the questionnaire the result provided states "you may be eligible for an open work permit" (I am not sure about the current questionnaire but this was certainly the case a few months back).

The "MAY" word indicates that VOs can apply discretion when the 4 month rule is not met. On this note several people on this forum have applied for a BOWP when they had numerous more months to go and got approved.

Marina,

I just tried the questionnaire again and it still gives me the following result with an expiry of the current status in Canada (Work Permit) provided as December 2015:

Working in Canada – Your personal checklist

Based on your answers, you may be eligible to come to Canada as a worker.
