Hello, If anyone could help me out that would be great just trying to figure out if I can apply for my canadian citizenship or not.

My Story:

Born in 1987
Father was born in Canada and is Canadian
Mother was born in the USA and is American.
I have never lived in Canada.
Sense I have been born my parents have also never lived in Canada.

If I apply for my Canadian Citizenship will it be granted because my father is Canadian, and do I need to apply by a certain age?

Thanks for the help.

1. Assuming your father's parents weren't diplomats, then you are a Canadian citizen, first generation born abroad.
2. You have to apply for proof of citizenship. : http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/citizenship/proof-how.asp

You were born in Canada and your parents were not diplomats so your birth certificate should suffice as your proof of citizenship. You should try applying for a passport, see http://passport.gc.ca/info/index.aspx?lang=eng#

I assume you're asking about US citizenship? Based on the above it sounds like you and your adopted parents live in Canada and have never lived in the US.... I don't think you're a dual citizen. You generally become a US citizen after you move to the US -- whether that happens automatically (under the Child Citizenship Act of 2000) or your parents apply for your naturalization after the move. From the State Dept. website: http://travel.state.gov/content/dam/aa/pdfs/Intercountry_Adoption_From_A_Z.pdf Not sure about the details though. You should ask on a US immigration forum. This is a good one though I don't know how busy it is for adoption related issues: http://forums.immigration.com/

Thank you for your reply, Margobear, but I need to clarify that I am talking about Canadian Citizenship, and have been living in the US since moving here as a child. I carry a US passport, vote, pay taxes and all that fun stuff, but what I am curious about is if I am a dual citizen, being born in Canada. but now living in the US for some 50 years.

I think you may be a dual citizen. As per Leon's post, order a birth certificate (https://www.ontario.ca/Get%20a%20birth%20certificate) and try to apply for a Canadian passport (http://passport.gc.ca/index.aspx?lang=eng) or citizenship certificate (http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/citizenship/proof.asp).

Canada started recognizing dual citizenship in 1977. If you became a naturalized US citizen before this date, you lost your Canadian citizenship at this point. On the other hand another law was passed in 2009 that restored citizenship in most cases. See: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/citizenship/rules_2009.asp

BTW, your children (but definitely not your grandchildren) may also be Canadian citizens.
