Hi there,

I have a question about paying taxes when you do your landing at the border. I read some people provided a 'goods to follow' list containing all the items you brought/will bring to Canada, to avoid future taxation. Is this true and necessary?

Also, if I plan to shop at US outlets before returning to Canada as PR, will I be taxed on the items I bought? Or will there be a limitation?

Your help and responses are most appreciated!
Thank you!

Hi,

1). The goods to follow list is for used items only (if you own them 6 months or more)
2) Every traveler has their own exemptions up to $800. If you go over this amount, you might be taxed.

Depends on how long you were in the US and the officer's mood. Here's the full list of allowances:

Last time I took a day trip in Buffalo, the officer asked how much we spent, we said $200 and were ready to show receipts, but he just let us through.
