Hello, I am preparing to sponsor my wife from USA to Canada we are planning on driving up to cross the border. I was wondering how many of you have had success crossing the border after informing the agent that you are planning to sponsor your spouse. I know we will need to be prepared with our paper work and marriage license but am worried that they might just turn my wife away. I was planning on sponsoring her inland as she has no need to return to the US.

We thought of just telling the agent that we are visiting as we have a wedding to attend at the time, and hope we got a visa stamp or record but feel that sounds to risky.

Any help would be appreciated.

If she's American you should really sponsor her outland. Typically way way faster. And yes - you can apply outland while she is in Canada as a visitor.

File the outland application before you try crossing the border. Bring proof with you that the application has been filed and all of the application fees paid. At the border you should let the officials know that you have applied to sponsor her. You (or your wife) should also indicate that your wife knows she can only stay permanently once her PR visa has been approved and that she knows that her status right now is only that of a visitor.

I crossed into Canada on April 19th with the bank receipt proving the fees had been paid a copy of my marriage certificate and big brown envelope with our printed app. when we pulled up to the window he took our passports and before he even scanned them we told him we were newly married (April 7th) and we would like to have a visitor record he handed us a yellow slip and into immigration we went. Guard asked my husband 2 questions 1. are you married? and you will support her during her stay? he said yes to both and he told my husband he can take the kids to the car lol he looked at receipt and marriage certificate and printed me out a visitor record depends on the guard how long just if your gonna stay longer then given on entry make sure to file the extension.
