Hello,

My mother is eligible to apply for citizenship however she was told that she will need a birth certificate. However, she does not have one and her parents are not alive either. What should one do in this situation? Is a birth certificate absolutely necessary? Any workaround? Thanks.

In what state, city, or province was she born? Generally you should be able to order a copy from whatever locale issued it.

Generally, you don't need a birth certificate, see document checklist here:
http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/pdf/kits/citizen/CIT0007E-2.pdf

However, she will need her foreign passport and depending on the country that one is hard to get without a birth certificate.

By "eligible to apply for citizenship" do you mean that she is the daughter of a Canadian citizen? If so, she is likely already a citizen and needs to apply for proof. In that case, she needs her birth certificate and that of her Canadian parent, both of which *should* be available from the vital statistics department in the province/state/country where the birth occurred.

I do not have my birth certificate and have been able to easily provide the necessary ID for all applications to not need it.... assuming she IS able to provide PR Card. Drivers Lisc. Passport. Health Care Card etc.

I have never been asked by immigration to supply or present it either.

(Edit: Also assuming she is not wishing to apply By Descent)

Yes, not sure whether the OP's mother is a PR applying for a grant of citizenship, or is a citizen by descent. If a PR, why would she need her birth certificate at this point? We need more information from the OP.

My mother is a PR who is eligible to apply for citizenship. Country of birth is Pakistan. She does her have Pakistani passport, health card and PR card. Will those suffice?

A friend of hers told her that she would need her birth certificate and hence she asked me to find out if she really would before we go ahead and start the application process.

Thanks for all the input guys!

Hi Layla,

You became a PR and then applied for citizenship? If so, that is the situation my mother is in and yes she can provide all the necessary IDs except for a drivers license because she doesnt drive but I doubt that would be a problem.

Yes. I became a permanent resident and am currently applying for Citizenship. I have sat the test and status has changed to DM and I am awaiting my oath invite.

I have never needed a birth certificate for either my PR or Citizenship applications / renewals etc
