Can I get a one way ticket without any questioning getting across the border? Im planning on stayin in canada for up to 6 months.

The more it looks like you're going to stay beyond when you're allowed (which may not be six months), the more likely it is that you'll be sent back.

If you can get a round trip ticket for 6 months later that would help assure customs that you're returning. If you didn't have a return ticket you'd have to convince customs that you still have ties to your home country most likely.

Essentially they want to make sure that you are not running away illegally to the country and indeed plan to return and a return ticket often is enough to tell them that.

First off...where are you from a_larae3 because deep down inside I believe it has a lot to do with how they ask questions.

My fiance came to Canada without a return ticket and stayed for 6 months. She didn't have to prove ties to her country either. I think it depends on the customs agent. Obviously you would be avoiding certain questions if you tried your best to show when you were leaving.

I also don't think that they automatically think you're coming here to run away illegaly.

When you're coming from any visa-exempt country (including the States) you're authorized to remain in Canada for up to six months once you're admitted. That doesn't mean you can come to a Canadian port of entry and request to be admitted for six months. There's a big difference. Normally, if you come and ask to stay for six months, you're going to end up answering questions about why you don't have a job that requires you to go back, etc., and the next thing you know they'll be refusing you entry because you can't prove you have "sufficient ties" to compel you to return. If you can prove you do have sufficient ties, they'll still make you prove that you have enough funds to support yourself for a six month's stay.

It's much easier to arrive with an intended return date that is within a reasonable amount of time, and proof of that (like a return airline ticket). Even if you don't use it - because, again, once you're admitted to Canada, you're authorized to stay for up to six months so nothing requires you to use that return trip once you're in - it will make getting into the country a lot simpler. The longer you request to stay, the more hassle you can expect to get.

I'd say so - but not one for a six months return. Make it no longer than about 3 weeks - and that will be your story. You're coming for a visit to see family friends . . . . attend a hockey game, whatever. And you're going home in 3 weeks. You can make it exchangeable if you think you might eventually use it to go back. That way you can "trade" it for a new ticket later on. Just depends on whether it's worth it to spend the extra $$. If you want to go cheap, just get a regular, non-refundable round trip ticket and blow off the return fare. You can always go back to the States anytime without needing a round-trip ticket that direction.

When my American partner came for 5 days in November, they expicitly gave him 6 months (stamped and dated in his passport), after being satisfied that he had a job and an apartment to return to.

When I drove him across the border last week, we told them he wanted to stay while his PR application was processed. They asked him how long he wanted to stay and he said 6 months, but the secondary officer determined that he had lost his job, moved out of his apartment, left some things at his dad's place (the only place he can now return to), and she gave him 3 months (on a Visitor Record). She told us that she really didn't think he had sufficient ties to the U.S. that she could be sure that he would return.

Apparently not, but that wouldn't have mattered at that point. He'd been in Canada for almost six months, asked for a longer stay and was lucky that he wasn't excluded from Canada until he could prove they were married. That's what they did to us in the same situation.

If that was addressed to me, he did have a return e-ticket for 5 days later (from a different airport on a different airline, because it was cheaper). It was the 25 Nov. and they wrote below the stamp "24 MA 10" which we thought was March, but after I thought about it for a while, I'm sure that was May. He wasn't going to print out the e-ticket for the return flight since his printer was basically out of ink, but I told him he'd better have it if they asked. He did return to the U.S. in 5 days, just as he said he would.

Last week, we drove all the way up from Florida to Ottawa and I thought about buying a return ticket, but he'd only have been flying back to central Pennsylvania and the only flexible ticket that we could have gotten was out of Buffalo. Since it's only an 8 1/2 hour drive to his dad's place in PA and it's a 6 hour drive to Buffalo from here, that really wouldn't have made much sense anyway.

So, we showed them the PR papers mostly completed and told them we wanted to stay together while they were processed. I intended to pay up front for the PR app, but then I got online and found out Buffalo doesn't accept online payments. My further investigation seems to indicate that the package has to be sent to CPC-M for an outland app anyway, so we can do a web payment. Do I understand that correctly anyone?

I was worried about having some evidence of our conjugal relationship for the IO at the border, but she didn't even glance through all the stuff we had filled out. She just wanted to know if we had both a sponsor form and an applicant form. So, she had no doubts about our relationship. She was only concerned with ties to the U.S. She also told us that we were doing the whole process backwards. We are waiting for the FBI clearance so we can send a complete application, but she thought that maybe we should at least send the sponsorship forms first. I see now that they won't accept them separately like that. We will have to request an extension to the Vistor Record in 2 months and I'm still worried that we won't hear back from the FBI by then.

i had my round trip ticket when i was going to visit my bf. just to be sure they wont get suspicious.
on the other hand where i buy tickets, one way ticket or round trip costs almost the same so i had no doubt to get a round trip. u never know maybe u WILL be wanting to go back home.
