Looking to go via the spousal sponsorship option, but is it better to get married in Canada or in the UK?

I am English by birth and my fiancée is Canadian by birth and lives in Canada, I am currently based in the UK.

I know if she comes to the UK to get married I believe she has to go to a British embassy to get a certificate but as I understand it I can get married without seeing an embassy first if we got married in Canada?

So any advice is appreciated

Thanks

I have no idea about the regulations in Britain, but you are correct about Canada. You just go down with the required identification to get your marriage licence and then you can get married.

Could you let me know what the required ID is? or a link to an official website for that kind of info?

Thanks

hi

as far i know you have to apply for (Certificate of approval for marriage from Home office) i have married in London when i was on student visa. i am actually from india. i did apply for this certificate and i got it from home office. it took around 7 to 10 days and fees for that was 300 pound. i had to sent my original passport and all necessary document to them as well as my wife passport too.

so all you can do is go to any council marriage register office they will let you know what you have to apply for it?

if you are EU national then it might not require i am not sure about it actually.

i hope this will help you.

I was married last year in UK to my Canadian husband and he needed to get a fiance visa in order to get married in UK which he obtained in Canada before he came over for the wedding.

I got married in Canada to my Canadian partner in June of 2009. When you go to get the marriage license, you literally need just one form of Picture I.D. I took my passport and that was enough. Your partner will have to take one also.

It's really simple and easy, and only takes a few minutes to complete. We got married in BC, and the marriage license was valid for three months. Take note of that, because if your license isn't valid, you can't get married!

I personally, would be inclined to say that it's easier to get married in Canada than it is in the UK. I think it depends on what you want for your wedding. Heck, my husband and I spent less than $300 on our entire wedding, and still celebrated with a party for our friends.

Good luck!

Hi Kimbie,
My husband and I were married this year in Ontario. When all was said and done it was much cheaper and easier to get married back in Canada. We walked into City Hall paid the $75 for the fee flashed our passports at them and walked out 30 minutes later with our marriage licence.

It varies with each province. In Ontario it's a primary ID (either birth certificate or passport) and a secondary ID (like a driver's licence). If you have been married before you also have to bring the divorce certificate. For official information you can usually get it from the website of your local city (since cities issue marriage licences, at least in Ontario) or the website for your province.
