Hi,
More questions..... what is the best time that the staff are friendly at the airport in Toronto from your experiences?

I have an option of three arrival times =

05:41am
7:54pm
11:01pm

Thanks for your replies

i'd say pick the time that you'd be best fit to be running thru airports... from all reports (including ours) it really is a pretty quick (but rarely friendly) process... took my husband less than 10 minutes... i'd say check and see what other flights might be scheduled to arrive and pick the time with the least traffic to avoid lines... they might be happier when it's slower... dunno?!

when you (or your hubby/wife) lands and goes to the immigration counter, they are supposed be directed to pick up their welcome package... most are not, but if you ask, they will tell you... it's nothing groundbreaking, a cheap bag, an organizer and a bunch of flyers on the services you can apply for/help you can receive, but it can be helpful and our immigration $$ do fund it, so you might as well pick it up :) the people at that counter are usually the friendly ones :)

the inital immigration for us was very friendly... and the guy who collects the customs cards practicaly hugged my hubby and broke into song... the one who processed his actual PR was pretty much a jerk as were all the ones around that he could see... i guess they see a lot of nonsense and become jaded... dunno?

congrats

I would prolly take the 5.41 flight because it is not too busy at Pearson during that time for arrivals. The busier times are between 3pm - 12 am but the speed starts picking up at around 1800 hours.

Also, most of the shifts end in the morning hours so you may end up having a nicer person who just wants to process you out so they can get home.

Congrats and good luck. Let us know how it went!

Hi,

Thank you for your replies. I wish I was arriving for PR, but its to see my fiance' and get married. I am so nervous from all the horror stories I have read of the IO at the airports turning people back.

Congrats on the marriage.

What country are you traveling from? Is it a visa exempt country?

I would strongly suggest that if you haven't already made any submissions to CIC regarding your relationship with your soon to be hubby that upon entry into Canada you let the CBSA know that you are visiting family and friends, if you have, or just for vacation purposes.

Last thing you would want to do is tell them that you are coming to marry your fiance bc they can easily turn you back with the intention that you are marrying him to gain PR in Canada and will most probably do it inland. You and I both know this is not the situation but through the eyes of CBSA, it's a completely different story.

Good luck!

I currently live in NZ but I will be traveling on my South African passport which unfortunately means a TRV. I wonder if I should get a letter of invitation from my Fiance'?

to the best of my understanding, if you seek a TRV, you need to apply in advance of your trip... if you do not have the proper access permissions (visa) affixed in your passport, i don't think they'll even let you on the plane, will they?

i could be wrong, but i think you'd better look into this prior to buying a ticket and making the plans... the biggest obsticle you will come to is getting the visa, not passing immigration into canada... i've not heard of anyone who has gotten a TRV then been denied access (i'm sure it does happen, but not as often as those who come from visa-exempt countries and say something inappropriate at the border (i.e. they are going to visit fiances while they have all their personal belongings packed in their truck)... i think once you get the TRV (esp a single entry, vacation one), you've already satisfied the right people that your purpose is a legit one and that you'll leave...

btw... how long have you been in NZ? when you apply for the TRV you will need to show ties to the country you are living in... if you've resided in that country for less than a year, your chances of getting approved can be slim... my husband was declined a TRV from London where he was living because they said he hadn't been living there long enough and to apply again after he'd resided in London for more than a year

TRV visa must be in the passport before you even get on a canadian flight. They will not issue a TRV to a visa required country at the canadian customs this must be done in advance the only ones able to show up at the canadian customs are visa exempt.

I know that I have to apply for a TRV before I can arrive. Will be doing in that in the next few weeks.

I have been in New Zealand for 2 years now and have a work visa valid for another 2 years, expiring in 2012. I will still be employed when I leave just in case there are a few problems on that side, you just never know. I will only give notice for my apartment and job once everything is sorted on that side. My two children also live in NZ so hopefully this is all enough proof of ties.

Thanks for all your help

Just get your TRV if approved then anytime to show up at the border is fine they look at your visa ask how long your staying tell them you are coming to see your spouse while you PR is in process and realize that you need to apply for an extension before your visa runs out.Just be honest, thats if you get a visa of course.Good Luck on the PR wish you the best.

I have seen from quite a few replies to be honest and tell them you are coming to get married. But these people seem to be US Citizens where you do not need a travel visa. So nervous of flying 23 hours and telling them the truth to be put on the next plane back. Oh what to do????

If I needed a TRV I probably wouldn't say I was getting married. Just say you are visiting friends.
