20 hours. I'm an International student so that is the allowed hours for me. Before at McDonalds I was working from 44 or more weekly, depending on the needs of the restaurant.
44 hours while you were still a student? So you got paid under the table? I wonder how much fast food chains pay by the hour

Actually, I would just want to work on weekends for 20 hours. Tim Hortons and so on, do they allow us to work in that way?

From my perspective , Don't go for minimum wage jobs like most guys do. I'm currently working as a web designer here in Ottawa and earn 34$/hr fof 16-18 hrs a week. Working in a fast food environment does not give you any experience and they'll treat you like shit .

It depends if the employer will even hire you based on foreign skills. I have friends who worked in IT back home and came to Canada and study while working part time a retail jobs like clothing stores and such.

But hey you'll never know unless you try.....for me I just picked whatever came first because I needed the experience regardless where I was working. Besides I had fun working at Tim Hortons and they were really nice to me :)

varunnarayan I think you have done well considering that you are skilled and getting paid really well.

However, I don't think anyone would like to go for low paying jobs or work in sth that is not their field forever, but as a student you take what is in front of you especially if you have to pay the bills.

Am just making sure everyone isn't out there ignoring every kinda job offer and gunning for a $34/hr job offer. I know how frustrating any type of job search could be.

For those looking, until you actually get a $34/hr(or more) job offer, make sure you don't ignore what is available to you just yet. We all have to start somewhere.

I don't think any job is perfect, there is always some type of drama going on. However, those experiences is what helps to build your tenacity for the future. Besides, the goal is not money making in this case, it is working part time to support yourself while you study (rent, bills, food, etc).

I wonder if "varunnarayan" is a student. If so, my question is how difficult to find a job such as web designer $34 /hr while a student. Please, varunnarayan, let us be informed a bit about that.

Let me elucidate a bit more on that. Firstly, I want you guys to know that It took me a while to bag this job. I'm currently here on a 6 - year degree and that impressed my employer as he was looking for someone who'd stay long enough for the position. Most students only hang around doing part time jobs for 2 years or 1 year depending on their program and then move to full time jobs. When it came to my case , I told him that I'd be available for 6 years which kinda played a huge role in me getting this job.On the otber hand , My degree ( B.Eng+M.A.Sc ) is totally unrelated to what I'm doing right now. I told the HR guy how passionate I am about this positoon and swept then off their feet. I was given a rather moderate task to complete and submit within 2 days to prove my abilities.

Most emoloyers also look at your English skills. I had a score of 8 in the IELTS exam and tool French as a 2nd language in my high school back in India. This backed me up quite well.

If you're not really good in English , You'll have to tough time working in MNCs even if they hire you. Believe me , I've seen international students leave jobs in 3 to 4 months just because they didn't have thr capability to complete the final report.

I'm pretty sure that I didn't get a single interview for the first few months of ny job searching venture. I was totally debated and contemplated about coming back to India. Well, My ex who had experience working in customer service industry told me to go drop off resume resume rather than just applying to jobs online.I went to each and every store that I passed through in downtown and told them that I'm looking for a Jo. I then was called for WD position at an MNC in Canada with benefits. It was too good to refuse but the catch was that id have to work on a 5 year contract. So, I took it.

Pro tip for starters : Never that include that you're from India anywhere on your resume or your cover letter. When that call you in for an interview , Tell them that you're an international student but you have all the rights to work here.

Most employers have a notion international students can't work.

Hello kaya,

You have asked an important question.
I like to say your time management skills has to be super good but the truth is no one can really manage time because Time keeps slipping away. You can only manage your priorities.

If you choose to work on weekends. Make sure you do most of your academic work on the weekday. If you leave your academic work for the weekend you might find it hard to accomplish anything by monday morning due to work.

If you work on weekdays after lectures then take your weekend seriously to catch up all academic work.

The amount of extra time you will have avaliable to yourself will depend on your course load and your job hours.

Now to part time jobs. Please understand that what I have listed below is not all that you can find for work.

You want to start with jobs on campus because it gives you flexibility and convenience. For example, your employer will totally understand that you are a student and may give you something that fits your daily course schedule.
Campus employers tend to give the student some extra time during exams.
Another adavantage is once class is done you dont have to start commuting to your place of work. Waiting for bus in winter sucks. Work and classes are in one place - Campus.

Consider Library assistance, Food court, audio visual/ classroom setup, the campus book store, Teaching assistant, Pizza delivery (if u have a car). Student union jobs/ positions.

Stocking the shelves at major grocery chains e.g Super store, Walmart, safeway, etc. Checkout clerk

Outbound/inbound customer service at call centers.

Campus Security. Front desk clerk at the school gym or any gym.

Waiter or cook in a restaurant. I cooked in a major chain and the 2weeks training was pretty easy. Some of my friends waited tables and made good money.

You can apply for a sales associate position at an electronic store as well.

Some of the jobs above i did and some my friends did during our time in university. There were good times and bad times.

Just make sure that you take sth that doesn't get you too exhausted. You don't want to be exhausted or else you can't study after work.

Also make sure that money doesn't become the order of the day because some part time jobs pay good. Focus on studies while you study.

Good luck my friend.
thanks man. thanks for such effort :) god bless you. worthy information.

Exactly. Tummies and Mcds have no problem hiring random online applicants. Most high paying jobs need someone trust worthy and can be relied upon. I had to do 3 criminal and 2 drug checks in my first month. It isn't easy but you'll earn a lot more than the others.
