Hi All,

I am an international student. What kind of job would you suggest to me on weekends, because I will be studying at the same time. If not, how do you handle your time for part time job on weekdays after school? Please, should we deliver our experiences here?

Thank you all.

Hello kaya,

You have asked an important question.
I like to say your time management skills has to be super good but the truth is no one can really manage time because Time keeps slipping away. You can only manage your priorities.

If you choose to work on weekends. Make sure you do most of your academic work on the weekday. If you leave your academic work for the weekend you might find it hard to accomplish anything by monday morning due to work.

If you work on weekdays after lectures then take your weekend seriously to catch up all academic work.

The amount of extra time you will have avaliable to yourself will depend on your course load and your job hours.

Now to part time jobs. Please understand that what I have listed below is not all that you can find for work.

You want to start with jobs on campus because it gives you flexibility and convenience. For example, your employer will totally understand that you are a student and may give you something that fits your daily course schedule.
Campus employers tend to give the student some extra time during exams.
Another adavantage is once class is done you dont have to start commuting to your place of work. Waiting for bus in winter sucks. Work and classes are in one place - Campus.

Consider Library assistance, Food court, audio visual/ classroom setup, the campus book store, Teaching assistant, Pizza delivery (if u have a car). Student union jobs/ positions.

Stocking the shelves at major grocery chains e.g Super store, Walmart, safeway, etc. Checkout clerk

Outbound/inbound customer service at call centers.

Campus Security. Front desk clerk at the school gym or any gym.

Waiter or cook in a restaurant. I cooked in a major chain and the 2weeks training was pretty easy. Some of my friends waited tables and made good money.

You can apply for a sales associate position at an electronic store as well.

Some of the jobs above i did and some my friends did during our time in university. There were good times and bad times.

Just make sure that you take sth that doesn't get you too exhausted. You don't want to be exhausted or else you can't study after work.

Also make sure that money doesn't become the order of the day because some part time jobs pay good. Focus on studies while you study.

Good luck my friend.

Hello Melecia,

Pick up some volunteer work experience.

Look into your local food bank, salvation army, religious institutions, volunteer with a professor, a hospital, student union.
- Lots of places are always seeking volunteers, especially in this Christmas season.

Once are you done, make sure you ask the head of the institution (e.g your local food bank manager) to be your potential reference for work in the future. My land lord once did this for me. For this to happen, make sure you are in your best behavior. No one will give you a good reference if you are not hardworking, honest and reliable.

Tax season is coming up. Revenue Canada goes to some campuses to look for volunteers to help students file their taxes. Hop on this one if the opportunity arises.

Also make sure you adjust your resume to reflect the type of work you are looking for. On your resume, in place of work experience just call it 'volunteer work experience'. The more volunteer work experience you have the better. You can have different sections of volunteer experience, e.g foodbank, warehouse, hospital, tutoring etc.

You can also ask some of your friends who are already working for job opening opportunities at their place of work. If there is one, some employers don't mind taking someone who has no work experience as long as they got referred by a current employee.

I did this once for a lady who had no work experience when I work at a local UPS store as an associate.

Hope it helps.

My first Canadian job was at Tim Hortons. Maybe you should try at fast foods restaurants.

No job is easy. I worked with McDonalds and Tim Hortons and both are tiring. There will come a time that you will be short in people and the work you need to do will be doubled. But if you like working in fast food environments, then you should give it a try. It's a nice experience after all. It will test your multi-tasking skills, communication skills, and patience (esp with rude customers. hahahaha)

20 hours. I'm an International student so that is the allowed hours for me. Before at McDonalds I was working from 44 or more weekly, depending on the needs of the restaurant.
