Hi,

We are expecting a baby on Feb 2016. We are confused on delivering a baby in Canada or my home town in Sri Lanka...

Can someone please let us know the benefits of delivering a baby in Canada Vs non Canadian country?

The child would be automatically a Canadian citizen if born in Canada.

I don't know what your status is in Canada. If one of you is a citizen (and you were either born in Canada or obtained citizenship through naturalization), then the baby would still automatically be a citizen if born outside of Canada. However there would be a difference in your child's ability to pass on citizenship rights to the next generation.

If neither of you are citizens and the baby is born outside of Canada, the baby will have no claim to Canadian citizenship.

If your baby is born in Canada, any children that baby later has outside of Canada will be Canadian citizens too. If your baby is born outside of Canada and obtains citizenship from one of you by descent, any children that baby later has outside of Canada will NOT be Canadian citizens.

Thanks..Few more questions please..

My status in canada is on work permit and my wife's is on dependent visa. We came here by July 2014.

"If your baby is born in Canada, any children that baby later has outside of Canada will be Canadian citizens too"
1. I am not clear with this reply. Does this mean that even if the 2nd child is born outside canada will be a citizen of canada as the first child is canadian citizen.

2. I am applying for PR now. Do I have to wait if my baby is born in canada?

3. Also, please advise the other govt. benefits child can avail if born in Canada vs non canada.

In that case your child will only be a Canadian citizen if born in Canada.

1. No - that's not what this rule means. This rule applies to your child's children (your grandchildren) - not to other children you may have.
2. No - you don't have to wait until your baby is born. But you must add you baby to your application once it is born.
3. As long as the child is living outside of Canada, there will be no government benefits available.

A bit off topic but but your baby is born here if you go back to Sri Lanka to live will he or she be able to go with you . Will the baby need to be sponsored , Having a baby in Canada will not automatically make you a PR.
