Hello everyone,

Anyone here who wants to share what the benefits are for sponsored parents/grandparents? It could be a simple processes and requirements of getting a SIN, health card and other free social assistance that we us sponsors may not know of. Anything would be much appreciated

If you sponsored your parents and grandparents, they are not supposed to get any social assistance (financial) in 20 years. If they do, you need to pay back the gov for it. They sure can get their provincial health coverage like everyone else.

They could join free/low fee programs organize by local community centres and charity organization like senior classes or new comer's English classes..etc.

If anything you will have extra costs you will have to cover for the next 20 years.

Yup, apart from healthcare, you’re on the hook for pretty much everything until 2039 if they land this year. As they have no work history, they arent eligible for CPP and you’ve signed off that you will repay any social assistance the apply for.

Even healthcare. No dental, no glasses and perhaps no eye exams. Medical supplies and equipment (all or partial payments). The bed fee in public longterm care because Canadians pay with their pension. And more...

The better read is here which explains eligibility for OAS. Note that parents must have lived in Canada for at least 10 years to qualify. So if you recently sponsor your parent, forget about it. Also note that they must live in Canada for 40 years to qualify for the full amount. So a parent who has only resided in Canada for 10 years will only qualify for a partial payment (1/4 of the full payment).

Looks like your parents landed in 2018. So they won't qualify for OAS until 2028 (assuming they're the right age) - and even then, only for 1/4 payments.

This is a pretty minimal amount. People should be planning to fully support their parents.
