BEING ON OW FOR DISABILITY REASONS!!!!

Anyone have any experiences of sponsoring while getting OW for disability reasons? I've already been approved as the sponsor and the file has already been transferred to the VO, I've recently had to stop working because my of a relapse, I really don't want to get OW even though I am allowed but I might end up having too once my savings run out, any feedback would be appreciated.

TIA

Are you designated as disabled? As long as that's the case it is allowed. However, if your income is low you might need to prove how you can support yourselves.

Yes I do have a disability and there is no minimum income required for sponsoring a spouse so i'm not worried about the amount i know i'm allowed just feel kinda weird going on it I know i'll have to tell them because they do checks and they'll find out, I'm just wondering if i should get my doctor reports and send it to them up I just dont want anything to delay the application, it's already a long enough process

The no minimum income thing is true, but you still need to show you can support yourselves. I've read cases of people denied who were on disability, and long delays due to docs requests.

It's not about whether you have a disability - it's about whether you are taking regular OW or if you are specifically on ODSP. If you are on ODSP - no problem. If you are on OW - problem.

ODSP takes a while to go through, it's not just a matter of applying over the phone and going in for an appointment and boom you start getting money there are forms that has to be filled out by myself and the doctors explaining the disabilty, whether or not it's ongoing, long term etc etc, it has to be reviewed etc etc in the mean time i will HAVE to get regular OW until it goes through, which I am allowed too, I've done my research, I am just trying to get other peoples experiences that have already gone through the experience or going through it now, (whether or not it delays, or what other checks etc etc)

Thank You.

We've seen applications refused here where the sponsor is disabled but on OW (and waiting for ODSP). CIC almost always approves the application if the sponsor is on ODSP. If you want to avoid creating the risk of delay or refusal - then you should avoid taking OW (ODSP is fine). But I can completely understand why this may not be possible for you. Good luck.

I am delaying for as long as possible but if my savings run out before everything is done with it might be a risk i'll have to take, unless I can get loans from family members, CIC is so confusing they state one thing yet their actions say otherwise
this is the worse time for this to be happening, I've been good for the last 4 years and then bam, damn MS!!! :(

thank you kindly for your response.

My husband became unemployed about a little over a month before we submitted our application, and we included no documents indicating any additional income etc. It was fine. I don't think that would be an issue for this person's case, and as mentioned it's not a requirement.

Isn't OW just Ontario Works? I believe that's the social assistance department of Ontario right? In that case, OW would definitely disqualify you from sponsoring. ODSP is disability, and definitely won't cause a refusal.

Different situation. Your husband was probably on EI - not OW. You can be on EI and still be approved as a sponsor. Not so with OW.

If you research sponsor requirement, you will see that being on OW (social assistance) is a reason for refusal.

Yes I understand all of that, but it takes months for ODSP to go through which is why most have to go on OW in the meantime, the guide says I am NOT eligible IF I receive social assistance for a reason other than disability, which I do have, (Multiple Sclerosis ) so I don"t see how they can then turn around and say I don't qualify ODSP can take a few weeks to months to process :( so what must I do in the meantime, my left side is completely paralyze right now, not much I can do about that right now, the doctors are saying it might slowly return to normal off or it might be permanent.

I'll get a free consultation with a lawyer to clarify again because if my savings run out before everything is done (which with my VO can take another 8 months) they've had the application since Feb, I really don't have a choice
