i think that will not be a problem, houses in Canada don't usually have "thick" walls...so i believe it won't be an issue, thats a technical answer only - but lets hear from those who experienced living in basements

I lived in a nice basement (for free) for about 2-months when I first got here.

Advantages:
Cost (over condo/rental apartment building)

Disadvantages:
#1: You can hear the footsteps of your landlord upstairs!
#2: You need to be nice to the landlord AND vice-versa.
#3: Cold floors, walls AND toilet seat. Especially early in morning. Not a big deal though.
#4: Home-grade heating/cooling system (as opposed to condo/building apartments with industrial-grade heating system)
#5: If you have a car, you park in a driveway shared with the owner of the house; You have to be nice to the owner and do some snow shoveling for him/her haha

As you can see, the disadvantages aren't really a big deal, but you have to keep them in mind

hi

i have been living in basement houses all my time in Canada from past two years:

advantage:
1. low cost
2. Cleaner and maintained
3. independence
4.privacy
5.heating/cooling no issues ( all houses are fixed with a furnace it takes care good enough) i am energy engineer.
6.Mobile usage no problem
7.Car park

Disadvantage
1.Sometime little extra for utilities bills
2.Little possibility to meet new people ::)
3.slight noise of furnace and other mechanisms

i prefer basement for students :)

thanks take care guys :)

My two cents on your points, based on my experience with basements:

i have been living in basement houses all my time in Canada from past two years:

advantage:
1. low cost Yup, probably the cheapest option available
2. Cleaner and maintained You are responsible for your own cleaning and not professionally maintained like apartment buildings
3. independence ????
4.privacy You are not always lucky with this. The house owner can sometimes be very nosy and paranoid about what you do in his basement
5.heating/cooling no issues ( all houses are fixed with a furnace it takes care good enough) i am energy engineer. This is not really an advantage, any place in Canada would have adequate heating, else you can report your landlord to the government. Also in the basement you would rarely have control over thermostat
6.Mobile usage no problem Don't agree at all. Was a nightmare for me
7.Car park This has to be agreed with the landlord, else you may have to park on the street

Disadvantage
1.Sometime little extra for utilities bills You can agree that utilities will be part of the rent and you will not pay a penny more (common in basements)
2.Little possibility to meet new people ::) True
3.slight noise of furnace and other mechanisms This depends on the house, not a must in basements

i prefer basement for students :) It is also good for small families and new immigrants who have not yet decided on where they want to live, as you can get a lot of basements without contracts and you are free to move out after giving the agreed notice period

thanks take care guys :) You are most welcome :)

5.heating/cooling no issues ( all houses are fixed with a furnace it takes care good enough) i am energy engineer. 8) - most of them are new because they are mostly leased or rental, the condition of these systems are pretty much good . except in some case :-\

basements are definitely a good choice for immigrants who are on budget and are worried about their savings...since accomodation usually accounts for 35-50% of monthly expenses ..it makes sense to try and minimize it

It really depends what you need...if you care about your money, most certainly a similar apartment in a highrise building will cost much more. Basement apartments come with perks, such as furniture, paid utilities, cable, internet, parking spots and owners can throw in even linens, and kitchen ware.

I have a large basement apartment like this and I have welcomed recent immigrants before. The latest tenants just found jobs in the other side of the GTA and are moving out on April 1st.

If you have friends who are looking for a place that is an all inclusive deal and like to live in comfort tell them to get in touch with me svet_diom@yahoo.com
