Hi there,

I am an Indian Citizen living in the USA. I have been banking with Online Banks, such as Capital One 360 and Barlcays, instead of Brick and Motor banks, such as Bank of America and Wells Fargo. One of the documents that we are required to submit to CIC includes a custom letter from our banks that shows our balances in the last 6 months. However, since I use the online banks they are not able to provide me any custom letters. They have a standard document that does show my bank balances for the last 3 months. So, my question is that since I cannot get a letter from my banks to show my balances for the past 6 months can I submit the 3-month letter and bank statements for the past 6 months? Will that suffice? Off course, I will include an explanation for this in the Optional letter. I reckon this will be a common problem for a lot of individuals living in USA.

Thank you,
Ash

Banks in the USA are sometimes hesitant to give letters with balance amounts because of what they see as potential liability to them. (Ie, you use a letter on April 11th to show you had $25,000 in the account on April 9th, when you've already spent $10,000 of that on April 10th.) I included a LoE explaining where the funds came from & included a copy of the bank statements. It worked for me.

My suggestion is to stick to brick and mortar banks until you are free of immigration control. Online banks can give good interest rates and offers as they do not have to spend on staff in branch and real estate. This seems like a good option but if you need a stamp or some letter that is not an online print out for immigration purposes, it can be an issue.

I called CapitalOne360 and got them to modify their standard 3 months letter to 6 months. However they only seem to provide a black and white copy of the letter. I submitted that with 6 months online bank statements. My hope is that this is sufficient. Its has only been 11 days since my AOR so I cannot guarantee this works.

I recall thread(s) on the forum where other folks had done this and it was accepted.

I think that letter with the statements should be good. Even I have an account with Bank of America and they are issuing me a black and white letter which is their standard format. I hope that works with the online statements.

I got it from BOFA and attached the statements.
PS: Bank of America issues a standard letter with account no (only last 4 digits shown for confidentiality), current balance, average balance for 6 or 12 months, date on which accounts were opened, your name and address, and it can be directed to "Re: Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada" in subject.
