Bank statement from Canada

My boyfriend has been getting advice from an immigration lawyer here in his home country that keeps insisting he will need a bank statement from one of my family members in Canada to apply for his visitor's visa. He has money of his own in his bank account here and will be paying for the trip himself. My question is whether or not it is actually necessary for someone else to send a bank statement when he can clearly prove that he is able to cover the trip on his own.

TRV's are processed primarily on the strength of the applicants application. Ties to his home country, funds to support the trip, reasons to return and travel history are key factors. Since there is no legal obligation for friend or family in Canada to provide support, bank statements aren't usually necessary. Letters of invitation offering assistance or accommodation are usually included, but generally the invitees bank balance is irrelevant.

This is exactly what I was thinking. I just don't understand why this woman here is insisting on it. I haven't read anywhere on the internet or heard from anyone else, that this is necessary.
