Background check question

Hi Guys!

First time poster, long time lurker. This forum has been a daily read throughout my application process - thanks for all the insight so far.

Having searched pretty extensively and read around the topic on the forum and elsewhere, I still can't find many others who've written about my situation. Curious if anyone has feedback!

Applied outland common law back in November - see timeline below:

App sent: 11/17/2016
App received: 11/18/2016
Stage AOR 1: 11/25/2016
Medicals: UPFRONT (PASSED)
SA: 12/02/2016
PR application in progress (ECAS): 12/06/16
Background check: IN PROGRESS

Canadian common law spouse sponsoring me (UK), app being processed in Ottawa.

My question is about the background check - it changed on ECAS to IN PROGRESS around the 1st or 2nd week of December (kicking myself for not recording the date). I can't find a record of the change so can't be sure of the day. My reading suggests that this progress indicator suggests that a final decision is imminent, but mine has remained unchanged for over a month and a half! Has anyone else experienced this?

I expect the answer will be continue to sit and wait but I have moments of impatience!

Thanks All

I'm actually a bit confused by your question. You say background check changed to In Progress on ECAS. That's not where background check shows up. That shows up on MyCIC. Are you saying that the background check changed to In Progress on MyCIC that shortly after sponsor approval? Or are you saying that ECAS changed to showing as In Process for the Principal Applicant side a few days after sponsor approval? The latter makes much more sense, it would be very odd for an application to go to background check that quickly after getting sponsor approval (generally).

I'm not sure how it works for outland, but I'm inland and mine has been in process for just over a year. It's one of the first to start and one of the last to be completed. So as far as an inland app...VERY normal. Assuming the same for outland.

Apologies for the confusion! The latter, on MyCIC. Will edit original post.

Not normal for outland, actually. Background check is the last thing to go. However, the amount of time it takes varies. I've seen them lasting anywhere from 1 day up to 7+ weeks. So if it did actually start in December, it's not abnormal that it might still be going on. My background check has been in progress for a little over two weeks now, along with some late August applicants and another September person. There was an applicant who had background check start on 1/27 and got DM from Ottawa on February 2nd. Since it seems like DMs tend to come in batches, I think background checks also finish that way. Like they send a bunch of them off, and then pull them and start sending out DM/PPR on those all at once. The length of time an individual check lasts, I'd guess, would actually be not nearly as long as it stays in progress.

Hey guys,

Thanks for the replies! Sorry for my confusing responses (still waking up :D). To confirm:

Changes occurred on MyCIC about a week or two after receiving SA (and have remained the same ever since) - my application/profile details read:

Application/profile status Open
Review of eligibility Review in Progress
Review of medical results Passed
Review of submitted documents BLANK
Scheduling an interview Not needed at this time
A background check is needed In Progress
Final decision Not Started

ECAS isn't showing much on the PA side (three lines)

Seems like quick movement on their end but if you have a fairly straightforward case probably within the threshold for normal. :)

Great! I guess we'll see. I'd like to think that my case is straightforward (together for three years, living together for two, moved together from the UK to Canada etc) and have heard that the process can be faster for visa exempt countries.

Will be updating the November spreadsheet as soon as I hear anything. Good luck with receiving your PR soon!
