If a family member is an ex-serviceman, then would that affect background check timing? My father-in-law was in Indian military and currently my wife's file is in NDVO stuck at background check since Jan. 2019. We haven't heard anything since then so just wondering if this could be one of the factors affecting background check. Any ideas please?

Thank you for a fast response and confirming my doubt :) Would you know if such factors increase processing time to more than 12 months?

The 12-months figure is an average processing time for 80% of normal files. You could be in the 20% of normal files that is not within the 12 months, or you could be a non-normal file that will take more than 12 months.

When did you apply?

If your bgc is lasting longer then 2 or 3 months, in addition to the military issue, the file was probably sent to ss. ( security screening) this process alone can take up to 6 months or more since cic sends it out to partner agencies to complete.

Background check in Gckey is showing in progress since Nov. 2018 so it has been approx. 6 months now

Most definitely you are in ss. This process takes 8 to 12 months. But the average is 8. After your ss completes you will get a remedical request ( if your medical is expired) (valid 12 months from the time you had it done) and then you will get ppr

Medical was done in Nov. 2018 and background check started right after medical was passed. In Jan 2019, file was transferred to NDVO. So, I think re-medical should not be the case. Is there any way to find out (other than GCMS) if the file is actually in security screening? Also, if I consider 8 months for ss, then the file processing will be more than 12 months in total. So, would they directly give PPR after that or are there any steps left after ss clears?

No Ss is the final stage. Ppr right after. So that's the good news. Ordering gcms notes won't tell you anything about SS. You would need to order cbsa notes. This will confirm that you are in ss and what the actual start date was. I can pretty much guarantee you re in ss based on the length of got bgc. But the ss should be complete and ppr recieved long before Nov so no remed required.

Hi..
I applied in Oct 2018
In January 2019 the file was transfered to NDVO but till now the automated phone number to check status says background check has not started yet. Is there any time frame by which it must be started. I have applied through a representative so i dont hv gckey. The ecas says that medical was received and file transfered.
Please help with the processing time. It becomes highly frustrating to wait with no update at all.
I am hoping that the ppr comes soon.

Some of the applicants even landed here who had applied in oct 2018.
Is there any way we can find out what is going on with the application?...
Please help
