Hi there, a few years ago I had fulfilled the requirement with the amount of time spent in Canada under my residency to apply for Canadian citizenship but I didn't at the time. I have been living in the US for a few years now and I am wondering if there is any way I could backdate a Canadian citizenship application on the grounds that I spent the required time there a few years ago? I still have residency.

Thanks for any help with this,

Derek

If I remember correctly, you can backdate up to 90 days at most.

What do you mean by back date? You have to use the residency calculator which factors in last 5 years and see if you are eligible to apply.

I mean apply for citizenship based on the fact that I was eligible to apply for it 3 years ago when I met the time requirements.

No you can't use dates from 3 years ago. The application has to be made within 90 days, from what I recall.

You would need to return to Canada and reestablish yourself here to apply

You need to have 3 years physical presence in Canada in the 5 years preceding the application date.

There is no such thing ... it's like saying I had enough money to buy google stock 10 years ago but didn't ... and if you have been gone for 3 years, there's a good chance you will be unable to renew your PR unless you move back now

An easy way to verify is just going to the CIC online calculator - you will see how far back it lets you go
