Hello,

My wife and I are both Canadian and living in the UK. We are about give birth to our first baby in December and start her citizenship/passport application as our work visas expire next summer and we have to leave the UK on July 1 2019.

I'm concerned about the processing times. The Canadian Gov website says currently 5 months + 3-4 months for overseas applicants, which is us. This means an estimated completion during Aug-Sept 2019. We definitely have to leave on July 1st 2019 as our visa and apartment lease expire on these dates.

Is there another option or expedited service available? Would a emergency temporary passport work? Has anyone else been through this recently?

Thanks,
J

I was in a similar situation. My husband is Canadian, I am German and the kids were born in the UK. Can’t remember how long it took to get the passport. I can remember though that I was able to travel after 6 weeks. I would go directly to the embassy in London and talk to them. I am sure they can give you a travel paper for the baby. I can only say, here in Canada it takes a week for the passport to arrive. You might want to consider a travel authorization and then get the passport in Canada?

It would not take extra time than regular Canadian passport as you have to attach baby's birth certificate with parents name in it and then proof of you Canadian citizenship. you should have your Canadian passport and Canadian citizen certificate.

I'm not that concerned about the passport time, as I am about the citizenship processing time. The 9 month figure I quoted in my original post is what I'm afraid of as it conflicts with our planned July 1 2019 leaving date. And we can't fly home without a passport, and you can't get a passport without citizenship certificate.

Yes, you can. When you apply for the Certificate of Citizenship, you can apply concurrently for a limited validity passport for your child.

short term passport is issued immediately and you will get citizenship of new born along with passport. this is not naturalization of citizenship. it is considered by birth and no oath etc
