Hi friends,

How can I find the cheap rates for auto insurance in Canada? It seems to be very expensive especially for Honda Civic's and Toyota Camry's. Should I call up an insurance broker or is there any other way to get the best rates?

Better if you tell us which province, as Car insurance is provincial.

Thanks for the reply PMM. I plan to move to Ontario and reside in the suburbs of Mississauga or Brampton. I'm 24 years old and its been 6 years since my driving license was issued in my home country and my record is clean. I'm sorry, I know you may not be an insurance expert but I would appreciate your personal opinion. Thank you again.

Rates vary, it also depends on your age, marital status. how long you had the G license, deductible, whether you get full coverage insurance or third party coverage. Just something to keep in mind in Ontario you are paying the highest for Auto Insurance.

It also depends on the area. Brampton, Etobicoke are very expensive. Mississauga may be ok.

I wrote a post about this issue. Here is the link: http://www.thecanadianblog.com/2011/08/19/auto-insurance-for-newcomers/

You will find a link to an insurance agent which gives good rates.

Good luck.

Thanks for the replies everyone.

And ahaboubi, thank you for sharing your blog. Its very informative. Keep it going. Insurance rates in Canada must be one of the highest in the world. You can buy a new car with the premium you pay for insurance for a year.

I am new in this forum. I am a citizen of Venezuela, and became a PR last year. Since I lived in Switzerland for almost 10 years, last Sept. I applied for an Ontario driver's licence and was issued a G licence, as I submitted my swiss driver's licence. I had been driving my husband's car since we got married 3 yrs. ago..as an occasional driver. Now that we need to renew the auto insurance and I informed about being a PR, several insurance companies want to charge thousands of dollars for my car insurance, and they do not want to honour my driving experience since 1970 in Switzerland, even though there is a reciprocal agreement between Ontario and Switzerland, whereas it is mentioned that the driving experience in Switzerland will be recognized by Ontario and viceversa. Is there anyone who knows about an insurance company that may charge a reasonable rate? It is not fair when they only recognize driver's licences from the US...and those other countries with reciprobal agreements are left out. Thanks

trooper,

There're no "insurance rates in Canada", there're "insurance rates in Ontario / Manitoba / BC / etc". There're huge differences in premium rates between the provinces. These rates depend on lots of factors, and yes, in ON they're very high. I see Brampton / Mississauga... OK, they're going to rip you off in that area.
