My wife is a Canadian citizen and im an Australian. She would like to sponsor me to live in Canada however the processing time according to the Canadian immigration dept. can be as long as 2 years. Is it worth me getting a work permit 1st and then applying for PM once inside Canada?

Hey,

According to CIC timelines for a Canadian sponsoring an Australian the time scale is 8 month at Sydney VO + stage 1 processing (Which currently is 41 days) in Mississauga or Vegreville depending on whether you choose inland or outland. Sydney is 1 of the very quickest VO's if not the quickest and sponsorship for an outland application would be nearer about 6-9 months. Here is a list of processing times by VO.

good luck :D

I am in the same boat. my boyfriend is here on a 2 yr working holiday visa and we applied in july through sydney outland even though we are both in canada. sydney is definitely one of the quickest outland visa offices and that's what I would recommend. there is a thread for all of us that have applied through sydney so you can ask anymore questions you might have on there.

It can take a while to prepare the applicant and get all the documents you need. That's added 3 months to mine, but you can research what you need ahead of time and prepare (unlike me). Check police clearance times. That seems to be the slowest item for many people.

You may qualify for a holiday work visa, which will give you the option to live with your wife while the application is in process. You can still apply Outland. See Inland vs Outland for a further discussion.

Hi,

Me and my Husband are in the same boat as the "AUSTRALIAN".

We have applied while I am outside the country. We understand the processing times ect. My question is, now we have applied, can I apply for an open work visa so I can work & live in Canada while the Visa is being processed.

If so, could someone point me in the right direction (links or people to talk to?)

No - there is no open work permit associated with the outland application. But you can always try and get a work permit through a LMO - Labour market opinion, basically an employer willing to hire you and do the work permit for you. You would have to have some special skills though, as the employer would have to demonstrate ( through LMO) that they can not find a canadian to do the job.

You can stay in Canada on a tourist visa (if you're from Australia, you're visa-exempt) but it means no work and no healthcare (in the majority of provinces, ALberta and Bc seem to be the exception).

Or - you can have a look at Work Holiday Visa if you fit in the criteria https://www.whpcanada.org.au/ that's also a very good way to be in Canada - and it seems that there is no quota for australians!! (some other countries - most others actually! - have a limited number of visa available that run out in 3 to 5 days...)

Good luck,
Sweden

I definitely recommend going for the working holiday program while waiting for PR - it will allow you to work, drive and have health insurance and will take a lot of the stress away from just waiting.

There is a spreadsheet which tracks applicants going through the Sydney office which can provide some more info on actual timelines - many have been going through a lot quicker than the times posted on the CIC website. The link is in my signature.

Thanks Rachy & Sweeden.

Apprecaite it.

I find the information provided under the immigration website a bit of a maze or a bit of a hit and a miss.

I imagine I'll be posting a fair bit on these related discussion boards now I'm in the same boat.

Hopefully my visa is processed smoothly, fingers crossed but still expecting the worse. :)

It will go well! :-) and you'll get all the support you need here, so don't hesitate to post. You're actually in a "good position" - the stage 1 times are fairly reasonable ( went up to more than 90 days when I applied...) and Sydney is one of the most efficient and fast VO. So - you're in good hands!

Thanks Sweeden. In the process of applying for the work visa now so I can head to Alberta in Febuary.

I am feeling a lot better after finding this forum :D.

I have a question for you guys. When you did your application, did you need to provide a fingerprint check with the police certificate or just a national police certificate?

The only reason I ask is because I only provided the national police certificate. Obviously, the police cert ect take a month or so to process, so am wondering if I should be proactive in the future (when my application has been received ect by Sydney) and get the fingerprint report done or if the national police cert is enough?

Ta :)

Just National Police certificate....

So I have applied for me Working Holiday Visa. But one of the question I had to declare that I have applied for a PR Visa.

Just wondering if anyone here applied for their PR first then applied for a working holiday visa (IEC) while the PR is being processed.

I have a feeling I should have applied for my working holiday visa first, got that granted then applied for my PR visa. As the intention of the working holiday is for "Australians to travel around Canada, learn the culture and undertake temp work to supplement their funds. It's intention is not/not as a means for permanent resident applicants to stay and work in Canada while waiting for their visa to come through."

Anyway, I was just interested if anyone applied for their working holiday visa after they applied for their PR visa and if they had any problems or have any advice.

Thanks
