Hi @killborn - did you live in Afghanistan for more than 6 months? Is that why they are asking for more documents?
I read somewhere on the forums that if you attempt or show proof (reciepts) or email correspondance of trying to get a background check from countries that dont produce these documents - it can also qualify - maybe someone else can also add to this discussion?

Thanks for the comments. I did spend more than 6 months there, but not consecutively. We would work 3 or 4 months on and 1 month at home and then back again. I did that for 6 years. I did write up a letter of explanation, sent copies of the 7 or so emails I sent to agencies and to the Consulate and spent $600 USD in fees, translations and courier service to get some sort of letter from Afghanistan.. but in all of this, I lost 2 months where my application was just dead in the water. I am checking daily now to see if the right person has reviewed my letter and has continued my background check. Fortunately I was able to apply for a new NAFTA visa and am able to work in the meantime.. but it's not ideal
