Asylum claim as an international student

Hello Everybody,

I am an international student in Canada coming from Africa Malawi, my family is from Rwanda and they managed to escape war in 1994 and we have lived in Malawi as refugees for the past 20 years, we are not safe at all. I managed to get a passport in Malawi and a study permit visa to Canada with an aim to pursue my studies here abroad and find a new home.

My questions are;

As an international student am I eligible to claim for asylum?
Can I get a permanent residence status after claiming for asylum?

1) Yes, any non-Canadian person can seek asylum in Canada. Being accepted is a different story.

2) If you were to be granted refugee status (after 1~2 years from filing the claim) you might apply for PR which would take another 2 years or more.

What grounds do you have besides having fled Rwanda 25 years ago? Given that you were approved for a study permit in Canada, your family must have fairly stable and comfortable lives in Malawi.

You are likely way better off finishing your studies, getting a PGWP and qualifying for immigration through an economic stream.
