Hi! guys I am in BC. It's been more than a year and I have explored a lot of things by now in Canada. I came here on skilled workers quota and was unaware of a lot of things and options that we all have here. As I had no family I had little help or advice. But now I explored and have learnt a lot of things. I guess a lot more than the immigration settlement people here. I might still not know it all, but I want to share with you, things I know and things I have learnt. Please share with me your concerns about your settlement here. I would be happy to help.

I can help you with any info you need kids, family, grants, subsidy, housing, packing, transit.... anything... During my visa application process, this forum gave me a lot of info and support. I just want to give it back.

I am in BC

rents can range from 750 to 1200 for aa two bedroom.

Living cost for two would be about 2000 dollars a month

the minimum wage in survival jobs is $10.25/hr

No, rents can be as high as $3000 per month for a two bedroom. Depend on the types of amenities you want. So as the living cost - it depends how you want to spend.

I am in toronto and i can help you guys with the info

In toronto if u want to find jobs u must live in downtown or near a ttc line because it is very costly to have a car, insurance for new commers can be 8-10k a year so it is not advisable to have car in toronto

for a 2 bed room rent, chespest rate for a decent one is about 1.8k

most survival jobs do not give full time 37.5 hours a week but only short stint or part time like 12 hours a week. Salary is about $11.25 an hour before tax, after tax is about $9 after taking into account child credit etc..

expect to bring 40k cash at least for family of 4 to survive 1 year without job first

Hi @ canadadreaming and @ GariKam, thanks for your post. Could you please advise/ suggest on what other way to apply and look for a job aside from internet job search and job agency? Also could you please provide some tips during job interviews?

And how do immigrants or Canadians with baby or young toddler handle their kids if both parents goes to work aside from getting a baby sitter, since baby sitter will be charging minimum wage per hour (I'm guessing) so it might be hard if both parents are only earning minimum wage as well?

Unfortunately, there is no way out, the child care systems in Canada is totally broken, the waiting time for government subsidy child care home is usually many years and private child care would be more expensive then your income from working. For this reason, for couple with young children, usually the wife will stay at home till the child is 14 years old so that he can be on his own. Some couple apply for super visa for the grandparents to come and take care of the kids but the cost of insurance required for super visa is also very high (8K a year). Leaving the kid alone at home will be a severe break of law and parents can go to jail for doing that, so it is mandatory that the kid must be with some adult all the time. Many couples decided to leave the family at home while the husband looking for full time job that pay more than minimum income before they reunite.

For job applying, you need to go out and network with people, many people decided to volunteer to work for 6 months - 1 year years unpaid and then when there is a vacancy, they may have a chance. This has proved to be the most effective way to get a job, however, at the moment it is still hard to get an unpaid position as there are a long line up for those positions. It is advisable to have enough fund for 1 year without any income.

Minimum wage in BC is new $10.45..still nowhere near enough for a decent living.
There were days when minimum wage could support family of three (a single parent with two kids). As late as in 1990's minimum wage was paying for all the necessities. And it was only $4.75/hr or less (can't remember the exact figure now).

10.45 is not even enough to cover rent in expensive Vancouver or Toronto. 2 bed rooms are in the range of 2-3K now in downtown Toronto. You work your *** off but do not even have enough to cover the roof on your head.

That's why I said there were days. Meaning those days are gone now.

Well, the home insurance sector should encourage more landowners to turn their income properties into rooming houses such that there can be more affordable rental housing near the downtown core.
