I know that I have to be in Canada for a period of 2 years for every 5 years but, how long can I stay outside of Canada in one go? Also, are all PR types treated equally, or are there special rules for each that may compromise PR status even if physical presence obligations were adhered to?

In theory, assuming that you have no other days absent, 1095 days. All PR have the same Residency Obligations.

Yes - you can do that. But once you return to Canada at the three year mark, you must remain in Canada for 2 straight years without leaving.
