Bonjour good people of Quebec! First of all I apologize for writing in English, I'm not fluent in French(yet) and I don't feel confident enough to write a post like this in Quebecois French(yet).
I was wondering, how accepted are immigrants in your province? It's been a dream of mine to live in the most based part of Canada for a while now. I just like everything about it(based on what I've read and heard) and I think I will like living there(when I'm capable of doing so, in a few years hopefully).
For context: I'm a software engineering student soon starting his career(most probably in .NET development) and I'm fluent in English, obviously. I will learn French, and I will try to immerse myself with Quebecois French as much as possible through music, podcasts, movies etc.
What is Quebec like for software engineers?
My girlfriend(hopefully my future wife) is a medicine student. I've read somewhere that there is a shortage of medical professionals in Montreal but I suppose doctors are needed everywhere. She will become a doctor, most likely a pediatrician.
We're both Serbian, if that matters.
I'm more than willing to assimilate fully within Quebecois society and essentially become Quebecois in all but birth and origin, as I'll be an immigrant, obviously.
So, what do you think? What are our chances?

Hello there :)

I will try to answer below to what I have experienced. Please don't see this as a discouragement.

I was wondering, how accepted are immigrants in your province? You will be welcome in most of Montreal area, as long as you at least try to have some French on you. There is a lot of hidden discrimination that people don't like to talk about, but overall, Montreal is immigrant built.

I am also a Software Engineer, but I'm on the process side so I rarely touch any code. Word of advice is switch to Java, if you have the chance. You will have a better career path if you do so. It is wider used and higher scalable than .NET.
My girlfriend(hopefully my future wife) is a medicine student. I've read somewhere that there is a shortage of medical professionals in Montreal but I suppose doctors are needed everywhere. She will become a doctor, most likely a pediatrician.
She will most likely have to start all her studies in Quebec from scratch. My wife is a physiotherapist and had to go back to school for a year and half to validate her diploma. I have no idea what the process is for doctors but I heard it is a dream crusher.

We're both Serbian, if that matters. It really doesn't matter. I know a couple Serbians and they're doing just fine. What matter is your willing to blend in and to adopt the culture. Also, be nice :)

I'm more than willing to assimilate fully within Quebecois society and essentially become Quebecois in all but birth and origin, as I'll be an immigrant, obviously.

I believe that you will do great, as IT people are also in high demand. I am afraid that your girlfriend won't have her dream job here though. In any case, I'd advise you to check on some immigration specialist on that matter, as it is super specific.

Also, immigration process in Quebec is one of the longest (just check the forum and you will see) to obtain the permanent residency. I'd suggest looking at the Pacific provinces, it would be faster. You can later on move to Quebec, have you not find home on those.

Anyway, I wish you good luck :)

Most of her medical training will not be recognized in Canada. She would need to repeat her residency training IF she can secure a residency. There are only a small amount of spots left but a huge demand for spots. Unless she is bilingual and able to work in both French and English she won’t be able to apply for a residency in Quebec. Most IMGs end up securing residencies in smaller communities and residencies that are less desired by Canadian medical graduates. Would personally not move to Canada as an MD unless I would be happy changing professions if necessary. If she can become bilingual (written and oral) in French then her chances of securing a residency will go up but she will still need to repeat her residency and only certain specialties will be available like GP, psychiatry, pathology, etc. Would suggest looking at other countries.
