Once again, US citizens get some preferential treatment because of the unique relationship between the two countries, and the similar benefits Canadian citizens enjoy. Canadian students don't even need F-1 visas to attend American schools.
I'm well aware why this is a political decision yet the Canadian PM and his immigration minister stand in front of TV cameras claiming policies are based on safety which in fact they are not, they are political decisions.

Apart from the USA advantage, you have the scenario that those with study permits approved before 18th March apparently have some immunity compared to students whose study permits were approved after 18th March (the only ones I've found on this forum in that position came through IRCC NYC and HKG) or still waiting to be approved. Again a decision based on politics not any science.

Yes...i think so. Things or issues happen on student before March18 are the same as after March 18. That’s quite unfair. I do agree and I know to keep border closed is important to Canada public health, I’m not hoping for border reopen but I think they can add more reasonable exemptions, of course we also have to quarantine when we arrive. Otherwise, they should rather close the study permit application since lockdown... At least don’t make us think there is a chance.

I absolutely agree with this, there needs to be a wider use of exemptions, of course I'd want incoming international students who have in person courses to be considered for exemptions, given all US nationals can cross the border for their "essential studies" and so can returning students already, those are existing exemptions to the closed borer. Then in a far worse position, there are families who are really suffering by being split up, that's worse than being an incoming student unable to enter Canada. It's so annoying too that under the current rules, Canadian nationals and permanent residents can go off on holiday around the world and can then return - yes I know, it's their right to go back to their country of residence -this is far worse scientifically than families and students wishing to make one way journeys to Canada.

Yes it would have been far better to have closed applications for study permits, at least that would have been fairer than what is happening now.
