Applying Visitor Visa for Partner

Hi, I am applying for a visitor visa for my partner this month to come to Canada for 6 months.
Should he submit his bank statement or balance along with the application (even though it is optional)? He will have about 11K CAD to show.
I will also be sending a letter of invitation stating he will not be paying any living expenses. Do I need to submit any other documents to verify this?
His uncle will also be sending a letter of invitation.
He will eventually be doing a PHD from there but I want him to live with me until that starts so our plan is to get a VV extension after the 6 months.
Any advice or experience is welcome! Thank you!

- 6 months is a very long visit. Note that TRVs are not meant to be used to live in Canada.
- What ties to his home country is he going to show?
- Does he have previous travel to countries requiring a visa such as Canada, the US or the UK?
- 11K is not enough funds for a six month visit. Even if you are paying living expenses, this is still too low. IRCC generally wants to see the applicant has enough funds themselves to cover all costs.

- no previous travel history
- he has a job here as an editor (new job, remote, before this he worked in his father’s business)
- He also has an uncle in the Canada who is willing to send a letter of invite also
- would changing the visit to 3 months be okay?

Am I right in understanding that he needs a TRV to travel and not an eTA?

Three months is still a very long time with no travel history and limited funds. A three month visit basically indicates that any ties to his home country are quite weak.

I would go with a 3 week trip.

Yes he needs a TRV. If you request for 3 weeks would they still give 6 months? And would it not look bad then to use the full 6 months? He’ll likely be apply for a student visa after that for his PHD

The length of the TRV is not what determines now long he can stay in Canada. How long he is allowed to stay in Canada is determined by CBSA at the border when he arrives. Visitors are often allowed in for six months however sometimes CBSA will only allow a shorter visit. If the TRV is approved, he travels to Canada, and is only given a short visit - he can apply for an extension from within Canada to extend his stay.

For the study permit, be aware that he will need to apply through a visa office outside of Canada (even though he is in Canada). Also, if he is in Canada on a visit (especially a long one), this can weaken the study permit application. If the main intent is to study, I would apply for that rather than the TRV. That's the better path.
