I’m in process of applying to Canadian citizenship. But my PR card is expiring in 3 months. I don’t think I’ll get citizenship before my PR card is expired. Do I need to apply for PR card renewal as well? Would applying for PR card impact my citizenship process in any way? What if I don’t get PR card before my current one expire? Will I be able to travel outside Canada? Any other potential problems?

We applied with expired PR card , no issue / relationship with Citizenship application/process. Though you'll need to be in possession of PR card, expired or not. It was checked during interview as well.

You cannot travel back to Canada on a commercial carrier without a valid PR card or Canadian passport. PR card renewal process is separate from citizenship. You can apply both together or whenever either one is required. Or just wait for citizenship, whatever is your preference.

If you're planning to travel out of the country within the next 12 months, please renew your PR card.

We were in the same position, PR card expiring, applied for Citizenship in Jan but traveling in September. We then decided to renew our PR cards some time in July as we didn't get our Citizenship until October (after our trip).

Hi InnaBB,

Hope you are doing well. Just to bring you up to speed, it doesn't matter if your PR Card is expiring soon or has already expired as long as you're not planning to travel outside of Canada. PR Card is a travel document. Even though, your PR Card expires, the PR Status itself doesn't. So, you can apply for Citizenship nevertheless.

If you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to reach out!
Good luck with your application.
