I haven't been able to find any answers online. My husband got brought to the U. S when he was 4 from mexico and eventually overstayed his visa and now we are moving to mexico. Is it possible for him to be able to apply for a work permit for canada or because he was in the u. s illegally would he not be able to. I'm wondering if it makes a difference because he was a child and had no choice or knowledge of immigration.. Also I've always wanted to see canada would we ever even be able to visit. I know Mexicans can get a ETAs now to visit canada but I'm not sure if his legal status in the U. S would affect things.

Hi Holly,
I'm afraid your husband can't get a work permit for Canada if he has been living as an illegal in the USA.
However he can try it by applying for an ETA and see the results. It's easy to fill the online form and pay for it...

My advice is: the worst thing he can do is lying about his immigration situation.
Canadian government does not care if he was a child and didn't know about his status all those years.

If they catch you/him lying, this is consider as misrepresentation and they can ban you 5 years. So it's better telling the truth and ask what you can do.

Best of luck.
