Applying for Student Visa but Tourist Visa is expiring

Hi all,

I'm currently in Canada and I'm working on my application to SFU. Given my current timelines, I will get my study permit should arrive by Dec. 15; just enough time before the start of school on January. The thing is though, I'm currently on a tourist visa now, and it is expiring on Dec. 5.

My plan is to file a tourist visa extension, and simultaneously file for a study permit. Is it fine to file applications for two different purposes, or does CIC have issues with that? Also, if there's an easier way to do this, I'd really appreciate it if someone can give suggestions.

Thanks!

Just apply for a study permit. Even if your tourist or visitor visa expires during the process you will be on an implied status until your study permits decision arrives. Make sure you apply for that inside Canada and remain in there until the decision comes.

Thanks wollyking. Would you know if it's okay to apply for both tourist extension and student permit at the same time though? Just want to make sure that I can still stay in Canada if my student permit is denied for any reason.

You can as long as the tourist visa extension is approved. Much like the study permit - that's not guaranteed.

It took me 35 days to get my study permit. The current processing time for a new TRV, submitted online is 61 days (you can call the CIC office and find out). No matter which ever you apply for, you will be under implied status anyways. Since you already have your acceptance for Jan, just apply for your study permit and once that is approved, apply for your TRV.
