I will have been living with my girlfriend for a year in April. I was wondering if it is possible to start the application process before I am eligible. Has anyone tried this or heard if this is allowed?

You can definitely prepare your application and gather all information/proof but you will have to wait until you officially live together for 1 year before you submit the application. Police records expire after 3 months so get those in order before April and get your medicals done just before.

I have heard of a case where the couple hadn't met the 1 year cohabitation requirement at the time they sent their application, they had been living together for 9 months, and OF COURSE their application got refused.
The rule is clear, you have to have cohabited with your partner for 1 year when you send your app. in.
Why put some much effort in your application now if you know it will be refused? Right?! Wait until you have been living together for 1 year, then eligible.

We were living for 11 months and was refused.
Unfortunately we got the refusal letter only in 7 months. It was such a waste of time.
