Applying for Post-Graduation Permit but study permit about to expire

Hi all,

I need expert advice on my case. I have finished my university work and ready to apply for the 3 year post-graduation work permit. But my current study permit only allows me to stay in Canada until Aug 1st. I don't think the government can finish processing my work permit application before Aug 1st. What should I do?

Btw, I have all my application documents ready for the post-graduation work permit. Should I just send it out online before my study permit expires?

Thank you all!

Yes, apply for the pgwp before your study permit and off-campus work permit expire. You will have implied status and can continue working while you wait a decision on your application.

From CIC's website: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/study/institutions/guide-dir.asp

Implied status: Students who have completed their studies and have submitted an application for a Post- Graduation Work Permit, when they are in possession of a valid study permit and a valid Off-Campus Work Permit, may continue to work off-campus until a decision on their application has been made.

What if I am rejected of the work permit? Other than leaving Canada, can I apply for the work permit again or apply for some sort of extension?

Is there a reason you are worried about being rejected? If you are eligible for a pgwp and submit all documents required, there is no reason to be worried about rejection.

Instead, wasting time to the point that your off-campus work permit and study permit expire before you've applied for the pgwp will create bigger problems for you. For one, if you miss out on the pgwp, you can never get it again.

If you are still worried, seek legal advice, otherwise, you just have to face your fears. There is no guarantee but if you don't try, you don't get results.

I don't have any reason to worry. I just wanted to prepare for the worst case because I don't feel quite at ease when I won't have a legal status in Canada when the government reaches a decision.

How long does it usually take to process the PGWP? The website only lists work permit (from same and different employer) processing time, not the PGWP. Does it usually take that long (50+ days according to the website) to process PGWP applications?
