Applying for Citzenship - Passport due for renewal

Hi all

can any one shed some light with my issue as my currunt passport is due for renewal in six months ( passport expiring in september) can i apply for canadian Citizen ship with short validity, does it have any iplications with citizenship process. Is it better to apply for renwal of forign passport first and then apply for canadaian citizenship ?

I don't think that the expiration date on your passport should worry them, as it is not a visa application (as that's one of the requirements for the visa application). they just want a proof of your identity for citizenship. and also that is a plus for your application as they can definitely get the required information about your travelling that covers all the passport validity period.

Unfortunately ,it has been reported many times that any govt. ID renewed within 3 months of application could prove a trigger for RQ.So, if I were in your shoes,I would have postponed either my PP renewal or application filing for atleast 6 months or so.

Thanks Suin and newcomer for your quick replys and sugestions to postpone the PP renewal. i can wait couple of months for the renewal as i am submitting my Application for citizen ship in a week time.

As Suin previously said, renewing your passport would not have any implications on your citizenship application. My recommendation to you is to ensure you have both the expired and current valid passport handy through out the process specifically for the test. They will ask you for both current and expired passports and you providing both will indicate you have nothing to hide and should be fine. I did the same and i had no problems during the process.

it's good to have a valid passport. citizenship application cannot be delayed because of passport renewal, it's better to have valid passport than expired, in my opinion...

Twiggy i have another small doubut that after submitting my Citizenship application i am going to have my passport renewed. Do i need to inform my renewed passport info to CIC ?

No you don't have to and if i am correct, there is no where in the application where your passport information is required.

In your case, I don't think it has an effect on your application. I sent my application in January last year, and I renewed my passport in May or June last year. I didn't report CIC about the renewal of my passport, and it didn't even come to my mind then.

When I had the citizenship test, I took my old and new passports to the test, and they checked the stamps inside them.

I would rather advise you to renew your Passport first and then apply for the citizenship. One of my friend was in the same situation like you. He applied for Citizenship and got RQ in 5 Months. In the mean time he applied for the renewal of passport, so now he does not have his passport with him. In RQ, they are asking for the colored photo copies of all your passports. (Valid and Cancelled.)

even if you renewal the old passport still be with you and you could submit the whole old passort color cpoipes with out any issue.

When you renew your old passport, you need to send that also to the embassy inorder for the renewal and to get the new passport.
