Hi, everyone! :)

Now that the new citizenship law has been effective as of October 11th, I am very glad that I am finally eligible for applying for Canadian Citizenship.

I have met the residency requirement already, but I am currently back in my motherland as I finished my undergraduate studies and intend to stay here with my family until I return to Canada for my graduate school.

In the meantime, I was wondering if it would be possible to apply for applying for Canadian Citizenship while I am living abroad? I still have a Canadian address and could possibly send the documents from that address if necessary.

Or..should I just wait until I go back and apply for it when I am physically present in Canada?

Thank you very much for your help and have a great day everyone!

This question has been asked here at least once a week, and if you have done a search on those threads you would see there's no simple yes or no answer. Since the new rule just started less than 2 weeks ago, nobody has the experience to give you any definite answer. it would just be a gamble that you may or may not want to take

Being physically present would be much better, but as said above, there is no direct answer to this question.

If you check the internal procedures for IRCC officers, one on the criteria for them place a hold and to do additional checks on your application is if the docs are mailed from abroad.

In the current scenario where people applying via regular channel can expect delays between 1-1.5yrs, I would suggest not to risk it and apply inland once you’re back. Decision is yours at end of the day.
