Hello,

I am a naturalized Canadian. I became a Canadian citizen in 2014. I moved to the US in 2016 and our daughter was born on May 11, 2020, just a few weeks ago in San Francisco. I want to apply for her Canadian citizenship. I am a little unclear about how to go about it. On the immigration website, I believe it requires the parent to provide a citizenship certificate? I assume if i present my passport that should be enough? I believe it is not. Does any one have any experience in this area?

I looked at it again today, it says children born to atleast one biological parent who is a Canadian citizen are considered canadian citizens. Can i just apply for my daughters proof of citizenship certificate? or i have to fill out other forms? such as sponsor her?

Your daughter is a Canadian citizen by descent, and you will need to apply for her citizenship certificate with form CIT-0001, either online or by printing it out and mailing it.

https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/canadian-citizenship/proof-citizenship/about.html

You will need to provide a copy of your citizenship certificate as proof of your citizenship; your passport can only be used as one of your two required identification documents, not as proof of your citizenship.

Good afternoon,

I am in a serious situation here. I am a Canadian citizen. I applied for my daughters Canadian citizenship in August 2020. To date, I have not received anything yet. I have repeatedly emailed them, they keep telling me that the file is not in the system. I live in the US, the file was received as it was registered email and it was signed. The last time I emailed them, I gave them the name of the individual who signed the documents. I kept looking at the timeline, at some point in 2020 the grant of citizenship was 4 months, then it was 5 months, then almost 12 months. I don't know what to do here, I keep emailing them, they keep telling me its not in the system. Its very frustrating. What are my options? Should I reapply?

If you included your e-mail address on the application, any communication from them will be sent to your e-mail. Have you checked your e-mail for the Acknowledgment of Receipt and the Unique Client Identifier number? If your spam filter is on, it may have blocked it from your inbox, so check your spam folder. Also check your settings if your spam folder auto-purges itself after a set period of time, hopefully this did not happen.

The timeline for proof (not grant) is 5 months, but this is highly situational and varies greatly. Before the pandemic, some people have reported that they received their certificate in less than 2 months; mine took 2 years. However with the pandemic, it is best to assume that there is no timeline.

Without the AOR and UCI, they will not be able to find your application in the system because they have not begun processing it; only when it has been deemed complete will it be entered into the system for processing. Because you were able to track it during transit and up to it's destination, you can assume that they have it in their possession and that they have not begun processing it. Others have reported that they also did not receive any confirmation from IRCC for a year, then all of a sudden, they find their eCAS profile created with their processing already completed and certificate on the way. Until you get the AOR and UCI, you don't really have any options. If you want to reapply, that is your choice; it will not make this go any faster though.
