Can someone apply for a TRV from within Canada when they are currently on a TRV? My relative is in Canada on a visitor's visa that expires in March. She was granted a visitor visa for only 1 year, probably because her passport was expiring in a year. Now we want to know if she can apply for a visit visa in order to extend her stay. She's been here for only a month.

The link suggests that one can only apply for visitors visa from within Canada if they are on a study or work permit. Does that mean visitors visa holder cannot cannot apply for a TRV from within Canada?

No, she cannot apply for a new TRV. Can only apply to extend her stay past March.

Without a TRV how can she stay beyond March? Does that a mean a visitor record can extend beyond the validity of the TRV?

Yes, she can apply for a vistor record to stay beyond validity of TRV. If extension is refused, then she leaves. Once she leaves, she will need to apply for a new permit.

So her passport wasn’t stamped with a date when she entered?

When someone enter Canada on a TRV and their passport not stamped at the port of entry they can stay in Canada up to 6 months, however if they want to extend their stay they can apply for a visitor visa record at least 30 days before their current (6 months period expires).

Assume she has a new passport or has confirmed that she can renew her passport from Canada. The 1 year could be due to her passport but is also often given if there are concerns that she doesn’t have strong profile (good savings, strong ties to her home country, good international travel history, etc.) and her first visa is a version of trial visa and if things go well and she returns home most are granted a longer length visa the next time.

The link mentioned is for WORK or STUDY permit holders.

In your case, you have 2 options
1. Apply for visitor record extension 1 month before your entry expiry.
2. Go back to your country, renew the passport and apply for a new visitor visa.

I dont think you have the option to apply a new TRV within canada.
