I am an American and just got married to my Canadian husband at the end of October. I went back with him to Canada to visit for the holidays and am having our marriage certificate mailed to his address due to that. My question is, since I won't be in the US for a while to change my last name on my social security number and passport, am I still able to apply for Canadian PR with my current name as well as get the doctor exam and everything else needed for applying?

I applied before my name change, Now I wish I would have changed everything then applied, I think it holds up your app. Your passport number changes after you change your name and last weekend when crossing I was given a Visitor Record so I can live in Canada while my PR app is in process and CBSA had a heck of a time printing my VR as my name and app with CIC is in my maiden name. They finally got it to work but it was a hassle.
I had been home in the US in July and changed my SS card and then updated my passport at the US consulate in Toronto. I have sent CIC all my updated info but I think if you can change your name before you apply I would. Just my 2 cents :)

I would say either change your name and all documents before you start dealing with immigration or do not change anything until after you have finished your immigration process and landed in Canada.

Part of the application will be his Option C printout and your FBI report. The FBI report takes 12 or more weeks. By the time you get that in your new name he could have his Option C report if he files his taxes for 2015 as soon as he can.
My husband and I married in December and I changed my name on passport, social security and drivers license and then requested an FBI report while he filed his taxes and then got his Option C printout. I got my Dr exam right before sending in the entire application. BTW the exam was 400.00 in the US and I think it cost less in Canada.
bring the original wedding certificate because some places require seeing it.

piece of advice, if you want to take it.

I changed my own last name after marriage due to some personal reasons.

my passport had my new surname and my wife's name written also as per my new changed surname.

my wife's passport still had old surname (i.e. surname before I changed mine)

but everything got thru our PR application fine and both of us got PR

I think as long as they let you live/work in Canada, with whatever name of passport, it should be fine.

I plan to change my wife's passport only after staying for some time in Canada
