Hello everyone,

I am a postdoctoral fellow (NOC 4011, skill level A) on a temporary work permit. This job does not require LMIA. I have a job offer that is valid through June 2015 with a possibility of extension. I am wondering how many points I can get for this type of job offer. I guess 600 points are only for the people with a permanent job offer supported by LMIA. I have over 1 year of experience in this job. Any suggestions for possible course of action?

Thanks.

Yes - you need an approved LMIA to get the 600 points for having a job offer. So unfortunately you won't get any job offer points.

It's impossible for any of us to predict that.

I am in the same situation. Even when I have a job offer under my current work permit, and I have 2 years of work experience as a PDF, I do not get any points (should get 600!!!) because postdocs do not require a LMIA.

The issue is that academic positions are "exempt" from LMIA but this is negatively affecting our EE application. Any ideas of what to do? My score is very low 330, even with good CELPIP scores (9,10,12,12), 2.6 years of Canadian work experience, a PhD, and a job offer. This because we get 0 points because of the LMIA.

Any advice?!

Thank you

That is odd. You should get 411 just for edu+lang+work.exp even with spouse.
Have you done your ECA?

I am in the same boat. Poor us.....It is hard to believe that You only get 330. There must be something wrong or you didn't do your ECA.

Based on the nature of our job, We deserve points like those LMIA holder..I believe that is also the reason why they put academic positions in LMIA excempt category in the first place, but appearently they forget that when they design EE. It is sad but unfortunately there is nothing that we can do. Actually not only post docs, other professionals under LMIA excempt are also affected. I just hope they can realize that problem and make some changes, even though I don't think it will happen in a short term.

Agreed. There should be a provision for this such as asking g "whether your job need positiveLMIA" and if we answer NO and give resin then they should add that 600 points or there shud be separate pool for few lmia exemptions.

After completing your EE application, did you guys register for Job Bank??!

This is contradictory since we do have job offers, but may be necessary?!

One of the messages says that because we do not have a "valid job offer" supported by an LMIA (even when we do have a job offer, but LMIA except under our work permits), we need to register with Job Bank.

It says that if we don't register within 30 days, our EE profile will expire.

Any thoughts?

This is normal. In the eyes of CIC, have a job without LMIA is the same as Not having a job.

You will need to register with job bank as instructed in PDF message CIC sent when you first create EE profile. It contains the link and codes you'll need to complete Job bank

Hi

Is "NOC 4011, skill level A" the correct NOC code for postdocs? In Canada usually postdocs don't do teaching, but the main duty for NOC 4011 seems to be teaching.
Did you guys use 4011 and faced no problem later?
If so, did the reference letter from your supervisor mention that you did teaching?

Thanks.

Yes 4011 is a correct NOC for postdocs. There are many postdocs who got PR with this NOC (including me). There are also many postdocs who got PR using different NOC which is more closely reflects their job. If you don't have any teaching experience don't go with 4011 as your application will be refused (most probably). You need to show any teaching activity like supervising students, giving lectures, etc.

The job duty of 4011 includes conducting research and publishing in journals. So I think 4011 is also good for PDF even without teaching experience.

Thanks very much for the reply.

I am co-supervising PhD students and give occasionally group talks as part of my postdoc duties. Do you think that counts as Teaching?
