Greetings everyone.

I am new here and I have used this website to answer many of my questions for the past few years so thank you in advance to the Canada Visa community. This time I am in a bit of a pickle and I would really appreciate it if anyone can provide some feedback if they have had a similar experience or knowledge about it.

So I am an international student and have been for a few years in Canada. My study permit expired last month and I could not re-apply due to not having insufficient documents from my university at the time. However, I have got those documents now and even though my study permit has expired, I am still within the 90 day grace period.

My problem is that I want to travel to the middle east but I don't have authorization to apply for a study permit from within there. So is it possible for me to apply for either restoration of status/or a new visa from within Canada then travel? And once they ask me to send my passport I can ship it to them from the middle east, and hopefully they could return it to me over there? Could I potentially also ask for it to be received at one of my friends address in Canada, who could then mail me my passport in time for me to return to Canada for the Fall semester?

Would definitely love some help in this matter so any comments and feedback is appreciated, thank you very much in advance.

You can restore your status either as student or visitor.
If you apply student you have to apply outside Canada probably Los Angeles consulate but if you leave you might not get back into Canada until approved student TRV.
If you apply visitor, you can travel wherever you like but you might be stopped at the border while returning since you are on visitors.

Thank you for your reply.

Los Angeles' Canadian Consulate is actually too far since I am travelling to the middle east, however there is the Abu Dhabi one specifically for the ME region. And for me to apply as a visitor in Canada would defeat the purpose of me trying to return to continue studying so I will have to get a Study permit + Temporary Residence Visa regardless.

However, I spoke to a CIC representative and they said if I want to travel outside Canada then I don't need to restore my status, but I need to directly apply for a new one. Apparently, you can apply to any visa office closest to your physical location at the time of application(as long as you have legal status in that country your applying from whether it be a valid visitor, resident or citizenship status).

Don't apply to restore your status if you are leaving the country. A restoration application requires you to remain in Canada and will be automatically canceled if you leave. Agreed you should apply for a new study permit as CIC has suggested.
